Michael Shanks: The Latest News

by Bruce Simmons on October 5, 2009

Michael Shanks at the sci fi movie Stargate Continuum Premiere at the 2008 Comic-Con

So as I go through Stargate withdrawals waiting for Stargate Universe to premiere, I started wondering about some of the cast from the previous shows.

Michael Shanks… what’s he up to these days.

He’s busy, that’s for sure.  When I watched him host the Burn Notice panel at 2009 San Diego Comic-Con, I just have to wonder if he were at the table, if he would have stolen the show like Bruce Campbell did?  I say that because Michael has this incredibly fine tuned snark processor that is on-key with the moment.  What little interaction he did have with panel questions was fracking hilarious.

The other weekend (Saturday, Aug 22) Michael joined the ranks of Amanda Tapping at the Stargate Convention in Chicago!

Did anyone catch his appearance there in Chicago?

He’s also in a sci fi movie called Arctic Blast started filming on the 24th of August in Tasmania.  This is Screen Tasmania’s latest international film venture.

Arctic Blast is about a US meteorologist, played by Michael Shanks, who saves the world from a mega-ice-fog caused by a rift in the ozone layer that creates deadly flash freezing.

Arctic Blast is directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith and produced by Gina Black and Stefan Wodoslawsky for Imagination Worldwide.

From what I can tell, it will be a movie release in Tasmania and then they will go international.  We may have to wait on this… plus, I don’t see a single reference to it outside of Tasmania.  Hmm.

Here’s what IMDB has up on their site for Michael Shanks’ latest and greatest:

  • Untitled Stargate: SG-1 Project (2010) (V) (announced) (rumored) …. Dr. Daniel Jackson
  • The Eastmans (2009) (TV) (post-production) …. Jack O’Brien
  • Stargate Universe” …. Dr. Daniel Jackson (2 episodes, 2009)  (The 2 episode season premiere)
  • Stargate SG-1: Children of the Gods – Final Cut (2009) (V)
  • Living Out Loud (2009) (TV) …. Brad Marshall
  • “Burn Notice” …. Victor (4 episodes, 2008-2009)
  • Desperate Escape (2009) (TV) …. Michael Coleman
  • The Lost Treasure of the Grand Canyon (2008) (TV) …. Jacob Thain
  • Sanctuary” …. Jimmy (1 episode)

Tell me you just noticed the RUMORED Untitled Stargate:SG-1 project?  It’s probably one of those Stargate direct-to-DVD movies that has been put on hold for a bit.

Personally, Cinema Static would love to see Michael break out of this TV and off-center film mode and get a break in something huge that will help his notoriety break out to mega-uber-super famous.

I just can’t imagine what he could do if that were to happen!

I saw Michael in Chicago at the con. He was funny, as ever, and informative like always. He’s the main reason I go to these conventions, and he never fails to entertain and make it all worth the money spent and time committed to going to one of these things. He is very down to earth and attuned to his fanbase. ;)

I’d love some of his Lifetime movies to come out on DVD, Living Out Loud, Desperate Escape and not just the Stargate stuff, though I always look forward to that.

I find him an absolute blast at conventions.

I wish he could get something else going that would be more mainstream. We can only hope something hits it good.

I HATE to say this, but he should get his butt on DANCING WITH THE STARS! Have you ever noticed that anyone who gets on there, their old and dusty careers take off again?

Since Michael’s isn’t dusty, I can’t imagine it would hurt much!

THANKS FOR DROPPING MY AND LEAVING COMMENTS gang. I enjoy the conversation… not to mention any feedback anyone feels up to leaving!

I was lucky to see Michael Shanks in my home town of Melbourne Australia in September. He was on his own and kept us thoroughly entertained. He looked tired by the end of the day ( he had flown in from filming Arctic Blast in Tasmania that morning )but he was still smiling and chatting during the autograph session late in the afternoon.I hope he makes it back to Aus soon and has other SG1 cast members with him though I would be first in line if he was solo again! I envy you your choice of conventions! He deserves a big movie role snd I hope he gets the recognition he deserves soon.Looking forward to Stargate Universe though I don’t think anything will better SG1 ever!!!

I’ve done a terse write up of what I’ve seen of Stargate Universe at

http://brusimm.com/2009/10/03/stargate-universe-a-look-at-the-first-episode/

I’m hoping it gets much better because it felt like a rip-off of several popular shows, squeezed into one outlet. Not very original, but then again, it is the pilot.
