The National Do Not Call Registry & Telemarketers

by Bruce Simmons on November 1, 2009

Telemarketers suck.  Plain and simple. They’re like spam for the ears.

There are rules in place that keep the “honest” telemarketers at bay.  But the insidious ones who don’t peruse and abide by the National Do Not Call lists are the one’s the tick us off.

The rules, if I understand them correctly, state that if someone does call you, and you tell them to add your number to their Do Not Call List forces them to adhere to the rules. You’ve verbally apprised them of this.

This is why these insidious cretins hang up on you when you start asking questions or make it difficult to actually engage in conversation.

There is a place designed to be a safe haven from these annoying rodents.

The National Do Not Call Registry is a place where you can sign up your phone number to be added that in theory, forbids telemarketers from calling you.

It used to be that when you added your number to the National Do Not Call list, it expired in 5 years and you needed to sign back up.

That was prior to February of 2008. Since then they’ve changed the rules and numbers no longer expire.

My phone numbers have expired and I’ve started getting “those” calls.  Calls from phone numbers that don’t connect when you call back, or other chicken fecal practices.

The numbers we’ve been seeing most recently involve (800) 321-8451, (228) 209-9560 & (314) 863-4706.  But you know there are probably hundreds.

The Thing to Know:

The one thing I can’t stress enough is DON’T FALL FOR THE FAKE SALES pitch that sounds like it might be from your credit card company, or that they might have used your name through a garbled voice mail.  They’re all hokey tricks to get you to call.

There are websites that you can go look at to verify a phone number that has tried contacting you.

Phone Owner.info, 800 Notes, Who Calls Me, Call Ferret

Anything You Can Do?

Here’s a bit from the FCC about “Unwanted Telephone Marketing Calls” and if you feel so inspired, here’s the FCC link to lodging complaints about this noise.

I know you guys know this, but if at least one person comes across this article and grants them some insight, I’ll feel justified!  Or pass this on to folks you might know that might need to know this info, give them a bump start in the right direction.

Have a good one!
