Is Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland All 3D'd Up?

by Bruce Simmons on December 20, 2009

When Tim Burton comes on the scene, most of the time we forgive most potential foibles going into a movie.  I mean heck, it is Tim Burton.

Yet this year seems to be an odd year for hitting on Alice in Wonderland.  The Syfy Channel just did their version of a sequel for Alice in Wonderland called Alice.  You can get Cinema Static’s take on the show in my review of Alice.

I ran up a quick survey on People’s Choice Awards site 46% of my respondents said anything from Tim Burton is good and will see it while 23% won’t see it if it seems gimmicky.

But I have to wonder.. and worry.  Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland is geared towards 2 & 3D and the trailer for it really makes me ponder why Tim Burton pandered to the 3D gimmick.  Watch it with a critical eye and tell me how many moments look like the old-school 3D shots and angles?  (From about 1:17 mark and on is when most of the U.S. trailers start but they’re all blocked from sharing while this vid from Disney UK is sharable for now from YouTube.  (I have got to learn how to snag videos like all the other sites out there do it!  Sheesh!)

I can see Burton of Depp fans going to see it regardless, but the project may flop if what I think I’m seeing is actually going to be.

Alice in Wonderland movie trailer:

It’s release date is March 5th 2010.

Official Studio Spin:

Tim Burton takes a stab at Lewis Carroll’s timeless tale of a young girl (Mia Wasikowska) lost within a fantasyland with this 3-D production of Alice in Wonderland.  Linda Woolverton (The Lion King) provides the script, with Hollywood heavyweights Richard Zanuck and Joe Roth heading up the production team. Burton veteran collaborator Johnny Depp co-stars as The Mad Hatter in the Walt Disney Productions picture.

It is about time that this story was remade for the big screen.
Aside from the occasional TV movie, this hasn’t been redone since 1951.
I cannot think of a better person to do it than Tim Burton.
As far as 3D is concerned, you might be right if it is gimmicky.
Still think you should check out “Avatar” in 3D. You saw it in 2D (luddite). Then tell us honestly if the extra cost of 3D is worth it.
As for me, I’m going to see it in 3D.
