24 ‘Iron Man 3’ Teasers, Trailers, Clips! Marketing Overload?

Robert Downey Jr. in 'Iron Man 3'

I love the movie & comic franchise character of Iron Man as much and maybe even more than the next guy and I am pretty excited about Iron Man 3 coming out in theaters on May 3rd.

The first teaser that came out with the logo for the movie was neat to see.  It satiated this gap of marketing that fans were clamoring for.  Then the sneak peaks for the trailer (code for trailer for a movie trailer) teased us.

I’d suggest that trailers for movie trailers is absolutely mad, but obviously the consumer’s need to know things about things that aren’t out yet overwhelm the logical.  And the movie marketing machine is here to fill those voids of need!

The first trailer whet the appetite wonderfully.  There was just enough to make one happy with the quality of the film and what’s to come.  The 2nd trailer showed off some things that had been spoiled or hinted at within various articles from sites like this one.  Eh, a single spoiler or two, that still did not confirm anything was pretty exciting.

But that magical distance of wondering fell apart as more and more teasers, trailers and what not started showing up on the web and in TV spots.  Suddenly rumors became fact. And suggested ideas became facts of the Iron Man 3 movie.

I was pretty frustrated about 11 teasers and spots ago, in the “I Got You” trailer gave out something that was only surmised, and last weekend I saw a new scene that didn’t surprise me, but would have been an incredible surprise for movie-goers who weren’t familiar with some aspects of the story.

And to think, the key marketing period hasn’t even hit the movie consumer yet!

Damnit already Disney, lay off the marketing already!  (But as they know, these kinds of marketing swarms work pretty well. So those who hide from spoilers have to keep a seriously low head!)

Up until today, (counted on 4-8-13) we had 24 various clips.  Sure, they’re mostly all rehashing the first few trailers but there are snippets of things that keep popping up that could take the fun out of the surprise.

Now execs are saying that we haven’t seen anything yet and the trailers give nothing away.  But I’m worried they have.  If not, THEN I’M TOTALLY JAZZED in the back of my mind that this is going to rock.  But quietly, I worry.

24 various bits, clips and such.  And sure, I’ve contributed to the deluge of things (Up to a point), but I stopped.  I have to have some magic waiting to be exposed in the film itself.  So I’ve been dodging the cast calls and behind the scenes materials.  I can check that all out after I’ve seen the movie.  But for now, I guess the question is, how strong of a resolution do I have?  As it is, I do fall for the occasional curiosity issue.

4-21-13 UPDATE:  I’ve seen three more new TV bits since this report.  And when I was watching an episode of Castle on Comcast’s On Demand service, Disney pumped in an Iron Man 3 clip in every break, and I was exposed to 3 more new clips.

Paul,
It is pretty disappointing to see so much, and to see what might very well have been one incredibly cool revelation spoiled in the Iron Man 3 trailers is frustrating.

So I’m going in either hesitant to be too expectant or hoping that the marketing spin about how “all these trailers don’t give much away,” is accurate, and not just what it seems, “spin.”

I agree, I have been actively avoiding any trailers or posts about it because it seems like you could almost watch the whole film if you stitch them together.

If i am paying $10 to see a film I want to be surprised (and not just at the price of the popcorn) and excited
