I’ve been waiting for the Forbidden Planet remake to finally git here! At first, we heard that J. Michael Straczynksi (JMS) had written a script, but then some “wonderful” folk leaked the details of the script, ticking off JMS. And rightfully so. Hence, he scrapped the first version we had heard about and rewrote it.
Then we’ve been waiting.
And waiting some more.
And waiting even longer.
The latest tidbit about the Forbidden Planet movie remake comes from Movies Online, where during an interview for the sci fi movie Splice, they asked Joel Silver about the remake project.
His response was that they’re focused on Forbidden Planet and they’re looking at how to make it.
I’m enthused by his answer, but not excited. I can look at how to buy a Lamborghini from the dealer down the street… doesn’t mean I will or can though.
It was Joel Silver’s intervention that brought Splice to the big screen. Even though it’s not performing as well as the other comedy movies that opened with it, I’m glad it was given a national release. I really enjoyed the story it had to tell and it wasn’t peppered with gore, excessive action, or violence. It’s a well done movie. (Cinema Static on Brusimm‘s Splice Movie Review)

I hear you on that, but I have faith in JMS! If anyone can pull this off, I think he can. Now, if it will ever happen, that’s another thing because I’ve been following all the FORBIDDEN PLANET news for the last few years. So we’ll see.
I Have A great ideas for the movie, But this idea will not destroy the originally of the movie.
My idea is a part two or three future discovers of the crew of the ship and earth. I need help with my ideas for the movie FORBIDDEN PLANET
The titles name is THE JOURNEY
I cann’t give you the story line because we didn’t do any paper work to
protect ourselves or with those you know that can help with this mega

This sounds awful. They are going to do what most directors always do with remakes. They ignore what made the original great, and tweak it to make it their own. The result is that the new movie hardly resembles the original at all. They add more explosions, and special effects while at the same time dumbing down the plot for the Transformers crowd. Please, just rename the movie and forget about remakes. Leave the classic alone.
How about a 200,000 year prequil? The final day of the Krell. That would have some action. Talk about special effects and set possibilities . . . wow.

This Great piece of Cinema has already been made! Just release it once more to theatres. spend that cash on advertising, and get the younger crowd to go see a REAL motion picture. Sometimes less is more. If it gets remade, you KNOW what is going to happen.
I’m tired of the naysayers trying to prevent remakes and prequels. It’s true that the original FP was a classic if not the greatest SF film ever.
It’s just that the original movie left so many questions unanswered. John’s suggestion of a 200,000 year prequil is an excellent idea. The study of ancient civilizations is always interesting and this made more-so by being an extremely advanced ancient civilization.
It doesn’t have to be a remake as much as a synopsis with a sequel.
Another book that should be made into a movie is ’43,000 Years Later’ . . . a story of a civilization that visits Earth long after its demise and tries to piece together the history that led to its Armageddon.

I think part of the issue is how many remakes are coming out and so few original movies… It’s obviously a marketing gamble as studios look to recapture some money from past hits. But yes, if a remake is done right, they’re awesome. I totally agree with you there.

It’s almost never about the “art” – it’s about the money. If these movie executives can’t make massive gross profits on a show, they won’t approve it and provide funding. Why can’t we get back to the art? Make a great movie and the profits will come. I’m saying that Hollywood should focus more on the art, and quality and great story line and screen play than reaping vast profits and driving around in fancy cars. Seems that with these humans, greed kills all progress.
The art of a movie and the mainstream of movies are two divergent tides, where the same folk that make reality TV popular tend to love the mindless action-fests. Then there are the outliers of folk who appreciate the fine art of some of the movies… the nuances and style.
I fess, that I lean towards the mindless popcorn movies, but every now and then I get tricked into art and still see enough to appreciate it Dean. But…
The mainstream money though, comes from the action-fests and that is what Hollywood sees… and promulgates. Particularly their coffers, as you pointed out.

As the author of Akhunaton: The Extraterrestrial King and Tesla: The Modern Sorceror, I am a devoted science fiction fan and a total Forbidden Planet devotee. Just knowing what Hollywood often does to science fiction, and remakes of classic movies in general, I wrote my own script for a remake and dove back into The Tempest for additional inspiration. (For example, “Robbie the Robot” became “R.E.L.”) I preserved the key scenes in the original and enlarged/elaborated them only slightly to enhance the theme of the original and tie up loose ends and unresolved details. My version might never be made, but I wrote it for the satisfaction of doing it right.
In the remake I would like to see scences of the first crew that landed on Altair 4
And scences of how the Krell deveoped their technology.
