A Night With Syfy’s Twitter Account (& Some Sneak Peeks!)

Syfy Channel - angled logo 200wMost days, if you follow Syfy‘s Twitter account with senior executive Craig Engler, you know that he spends time each day answering questions about various facets of the industry, as it relates to the Syfy channel.

No matter what you may feel about the direction that Syfy programming is going, Craig is the man with his open and honest answers on Syfy content and programming.  Often I find his tweet sessions pretty informative and insightful.

Today I saw one of Craig’s answer sessions (Twessions?) and I thought I’d see how it translates to an article for you guys.

He covers some Lost Girl, Alphas, Haven, TV series rights, Farscape, Sanctuary and a few other bits and pieces like how Syfy quantifies calling a project an “original” broadcast.

Here we go:

Okay, mini Q&A, let’s do this! Gimme some quick Qs and I’ll provide some quick As. I’ve got 10 minutes

How concerned should Lost Girl fans be that the show was moved to Friday?
A) No reason for concern at all.

Is Lost Girl going to be continuing on Friday nights?
A) Yes, that’s it’s new timeslot. Spread the word!

Alphas fans, you should follow @anna_lives. Something’s going on there

When is Haven coming back?
A) Sept. 21 🙂

When will we hear more on Blood and Chrome?
A) Nothing to say right now. When/if there is, I’ll let you know.

Shouldn’t there be an actual Paranormal Channel?
A) Doubt one would be sustainable as such.

Industry Insight:

When you buy the rights to show a movie, do you have to pay for each time you show it?

A) When we get rights to show a movie, there is a specific # of times we’re allowed to air in a specific timeframe. Very precise. Sometimes we can pick up a big theatrical movie for just 1 or 2 runs if it’s between other windows. It’s actually kind of fascinating.

Is there any truth to the rumor Farscape was going to come back in webisodes?
A) We tried. Financing didn’t work.

Here’s a great Syfy Channel perspective:

Why are some movies listed as SyFy Originals (I.E. upcomers Haunted High, Boogyman) but others are not?

A) We use ‘original’ to signify that a movie or show is being shown for the first time on TV in the U.S. on our network.

So a movie that aired in, say, Canada already is still “original” to Syfy if it’s seen on our network first before another U.S. network.

Why do you show movies in a series back to back but in a different order?
A) The ones that rate the highest go in prime time.

Any chance that another channel might pic up sanctuary or other canceled shows?
A) Doubtful but I can’t speak for them.

Would they have to buy the rights of a show from you guys?
A) From whoever the rights holder(s) is/are. Usually not us.

What are costs of producing new show vs picking up a show from Canada or Britain?
A) Generally much higher 😉
