A PERFECT GETAWAY promo art

I just now found myself the chance to watch A Perfect Getaway and I was totally surprised by the fresh approach this movie took, shining a new light on this genre film.  It’s a a great ride, that’s what it is and this is a SPOILER FREE movie review!  (True, it has been out a while, but the absolute best way to see this movie is unspoiled, if possible.  It adds to the experience of the film.)

The synopsis from A Perfect Getaway:  Two pairs of lovers on a Hawaiian vacation discover that psychopaths are stalking and murdering tourists on the islands.

What a perfect description of a wonderfully engaging and fresh slasher movie.

It’s directed/written by David Twohy (The Chronicles of Riddick, Pitch Black, The Fugitive)

A PERFECT GETAWAY Jovovich Sanchez and Zahn

When I started watching A Perfect Getaway, it seemed like just any other slash ’em thriller where I expected everyone to start running through the woods fearing for their lives.  We start out following a young married couple on their honeymoon, Cliff (Steve Zahn) and Cydney (Milla Jovovich).  Our honeymooners pull over for some hitchhikers who end up being a rather angry couple, Kale (Chris Hemsworth [Thor]) & Cleo (Marley Shelton).

A PERFECT GETAWAY Kiele Sanchez and Timothy Olyphant

After Cliff and Cydney lose them, they meet up with a slightly battle-weary, paranoid kind of crazy named Nick (Timothy Olyphant) and his girl, Gina (Kiele Sanchez).  Later, Cliff and Cydney notice that Kale and Cleo have ended up in the same neck of the remote woods that they’re in.   traveled 10 miles to get to.

This sets up the basis for creating a neurotic viewer as we start trying to figure who is about to do what.  (BTW, you’ll be wrong.)

The movie moves at a bit of a slow build through the first hour of dialog and character interaction leaves bits and pieces of clues and tension builders keeping you wondering when so-and-so will start trying to kill whats-their-name.  Zahn, Jovovich, Hemsworth, Olyphant & Sanchez each played their roles to perfection.  Olyphant fans will more than likely enjoy this role of his.

A PERFECT GETAWAY Jovovich Sanchez Olyphant and Zahn

I remember seeing the ads for this movie and it didn’t seem that different from any other screamer movies, but they completely missed the marketing twist to draw movie goers in.  It is the marketing of this movie that’s to blame for it barely breaking even at the box office, but the twist is a hard thing to explain or market.  That’s a shame.

It’s a great movie that spins you up and if you like scary, slasher in the woods movies, I think you will absolutely love A Perfect Getaway because of how Twohy approaches divulging who the real bad guy is.

In my book, this is a Twohy movie that I can add next to Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick!  I completely recommend it as a rental and if you like the genre or any of the actors, adding it to your collection won’t be a mistake.
