Today, I can’t help but make mention of the newest movie rehash of an old franchise, titled The Lone Ranger. I touch on its past and I also answer the question of how The Green Hornet is related to The Lone Ranger. Seriously!!!
The Lone Ranger stars Armie Hammer (Mirror Mirror, J. Edgar, The Social Network) as The Lone Ranger/John Reid, Johnny Depp as Tonto, Helena Bonham Cater, William Fichtner, James Frain and a few others.
Hammer takes over the role of the the ex-Texas Ranger that has been played by the likes of Clayton Moore on TV, and George Seaton, Earle Graser and Brace Beemer on the radio (1949-57), where the series was first conceived. It lasted for almost 3,000 radio episodes.
[There have been many Lone Rangers, just to name a few:
- Klinton Spilsbury (The Legend of the Lone Ranger (1981))
- Chad Michael Murray … The Lone Ranger/Luke Hartman (The Lone Ranger (2003 TV movie))
- Michael Rye (The Lone Ranger (1966 TV series) [1966-1969])
- Robert Livingston … The Lone Ranger/Bill Andrews (The Lone Ranger Rides Again (1939))
- Tex Hill (Return of the Lone Ranger (1961))
Depp takes over the role from John Todd, Roland Parker, (on the radio) and Jay Silverheels from the TV classic. A real Indian.
It’s being helmed by Gore Verbinski, whose resume includes some fun hits like Rango and the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise, as well is The Ring.
This movie has been under the gun for quite some time. We heard about this project in its development stages and it languished for a while due to money issues, both before it got started on production, and while under production.
It’s now getting its legs under it and the marketing started coming out.
But I am wondering how many franchise fans might be taking offense from the marketing? For one, I’m not sure about you, but I’m feeling like this should be titled Tonto, The Lone Ranger Years. It seems to be all about the sidekick, played by the more popular character actor of Johnny Depp. If you wonder, just take a look at the promo art above.
I for one, am thinking that the casting was off, but I get having a known household name actor in the movie.
The other aspect that I’ve heard wind of, is this Pirates look of Tonto, with a crow for a head mantle. What is this, the male version of the Flying Nun? It seems interesting at best. And again, I understand the need for creating a new, unique take on the very old character franchise.
But so far, I’m not feeling it. At least that was my first impression upon seeing the movie trailer. Each repeated viewing I’m becoming less hostile about it.
Did you know that The Lone Ranger radio series was the inspiration for a spin-off of another masked crime fighter?
As you know the last name of The Lone Ranger is Reid. He had a nephew named Dan. Dan had a son named Brit Reid. And if you know your genre, then you know that Brit Reid went on as an adult to start up his own tale of vengeance as The Green Hornet.
(Apparently in the old TV show, you might catch paintings or posters in the background of the house of the Lone Ranger, paying homage to the source.)
I had NO CLUE!
