Syfy Channel

The Syfy Channel picked up the 90-minute pilot and 11-episode order of the sci fi series titled AlphasAlphas is about a team of folks who have unusual powers or skills and become unofficial crime solvers.   As the Syfy Press Release on Alphas noted back in June:

Alphas follows a team of ordinary citizens who possess extraordinary and unusual mental skills. Using physical feats and uniquely advanced mental abilities, this unlikely team takes the law into their own hands and uncovers what the CIA, FBI and Pentagon have not been able or willing to solve. These gifted individuals must balance their quirky personalities and disparate backgrounds with their not always visible powers as they work to solve crimes, stop the ticking time bomb and catch the enemy.

Alphas will star David Strathairn (The Tempest, The Bourne Ultimatum), Warren Christie (Gray Matters, TV: Happy Town), Malik Yoba (Why Did I Get Married Too?, Defying Gravity), Laura Mennell (Watchmen), Ryan Cartwright (Bones) and Azita Ghanizada.

The pilot was directed by Jack Bender (Lost) and written by Zak Penn (The Incredible Hulk, X-Men: The Last Stand) while the series writer will be Michael Karnow (The Grand, TV: 1995′s House of Buggin’, 1993′s The Chevy Chase Show).

Callum Keith Rennie (Case 39, TV: FlashForward, 24, Harper’s Island, Battlestar Galactica) guest stars in the pilot.

I have to say that the show itself sounds like a fun, TV version of The Avengers or X-Men… kind of like what Smallville is to Superman.  In fact the writer of the pilot has experience with writing about super-powered teams, specifically X-Men.

The collected cast looks pretty awesome and the creative team behind the pilot, extraordinary.  Yet I hate to be a sour bug, but the writer that is pegged for the series episodes hasn’t had a serious hit in a, um, a few years.

That worries me, but I’ll sit tight, wait, and see how Alphas does on the Syfy Channel.  Ya never know!  Right?
