Battle Los Angeles, a movie from Columbia Pictures, is directed by Jonathan Liebesman (The Killing Room) stars Aaron Eckhart, Ramon Rodriguez, Michelle Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan and a large ensemble about a military alien invasion on Earth and Los Angeles is where we follow the actions on one military unit.

If any alien knows anything, it’s that when Michelle Rodriguez is on the scene, they’re going to have a very bad day!

Battle Los Angeles gives us multiple openings…  we first find ourselves following a few military personnel in a transit chopper headed into battle as we get a glimpse of all their faces.

We then back-track 24 hours and meet a few of the officers and soldiers in quick, meant to be endearing moments, of their lives.  Through this quick recap of the 24 hours, we also keep hearing the radios and TV’s reporting on the meteors headed for Earth, being predicted to land off the coast of several major cities on Earth.

Underneath it all, we have a shell-shocked Sgt Michael Nantz (Eckhart) and a green team leader in 2nd Lt. William Martinez (R. Rodriguez).  Along the way, they pick up TSgt. Elena Santos (M. Rodriguez).

‘Nuff said there.  I think you know where things are going to go from there knowing that.

Battle Los Angeles is an OK movie… it felt like a Black Hawk Down lite & Independence Day, in a good way.  They had the dramatic situations, but it didn’t quite grip my dramatic tension mechanism.  I’m not quite sure what was missing that could have made it more of a dramatic gripper, but it was pretty much a fun situational combat drama with aliens that fell out of the sky.  And maybe that’s just it…  it just started.  No rhyme or reason, it just started and it was every human for themselves as our military unit first went in to kick butt, then found themselves retreating, and then, taking advantage of an opportunity hoping for the best outcome.

Movie Review Popcorn Score 07I have to say that the movie DID NOT live up to the movie trailers.  If you remember, the first trailer or teaser was a very epic appearing & sounding mini-event.  Yet on a popcorn scale of things, I’d give Battle Los Angeles a popcorn 7 out of 10.  If you’re curious, you probably won’t be disappointed.  If you were expecting the next big battle movie or alien invasion movie, well, maybe not so much so.
