When I heard about the movie Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, I was looking forward to seeing this new project that was directed by Edward James Olmos.  It showed us some new material and gave us some extra insights into some events that happened during the first 2 years of the series.

But there were some downsides to The Plan.

I was expecting a stand alone movie dealing with the development of the Cylon’s plans to attack the humans.  Instead, what I watched was a set of fragmented scenes of events that took place in parallel to the developing story of Battlestar Galactica through the first two seasons.

It was technically new material as we watched the goings on of the ordeal from the Cylon’s side of things.  We relived many events of the first 2 seasons but in fragments.  There was no cohesive development of the story.

If you did not watch the Battlestar Galactica TV series, this movie will make no sense and you will not be happy.  Fortunately I suspect only BSG fans will probably be the only folk that pick this up, so my fears are mostly allayed.

What Insights Do We Derive?

What we do get to experience via the fragmented collection of scenes was Brother Cavil’s part in the entire effort to take the humans down after they failed to wipe them out in the first attack on the colonies.

We get more details on Boomer’s split personality issues up until when she shoots Adm Adama.

We see Simon’s part while hanging out with the human resistance on Caprica and being a dedicated husband to a human.

There is nudity in this flick, both female upper nudity and male “frontal” nudity so beware.  They don’t last long but they are there.

The one thing we do take away from the film is how the Cylons start to understand the humans.

The DVD is more like extra’s that should have gone along with DVD’s from the BSG series, but good extras.  If you’re looking for a movie, this isn’t it.  If you’re looking for closure on several different angles on events we watched in the TV series, then Battlestar Galactica: The Plan is definitely for you.
