Either way, there are some interesting shows and some not so interesting. I’ve chosen a select few networks to focus on here on Brusimm that you folks are interested in…. from my impromptu surveys and other measures.

Summer 2012 Series of note: Coming back, we have Rookie Blue and Wipeout. Don’t forget the all important social experiment of spreading… oh never mind… Bachelor Pad.

AMC has Breaking Bad and Hell on Wheels returning. Mice in a maze… I mean Big Brother will return to CBS in July.

So You Think You Can Dance is tonight… while True Blood is coming to a cable box near you soon!

On Syfy, of interest, is Warehouse 13 and Alphas returning. TNT has the return of Falling Skies season two and the sequel to Dallas, Dallas. (It looks like a sequel… but of the same name, but they have characters from the old show in it… as dads or grand dads. If anyone catches this, let me know what you think!)

Actually, I would not mind if anyone chimed in about any show they watch. The more the merrier here on the Brusimm channel. Plus if you chat about something interesting, it might make people aware of a show they weren’t previously aware of!

With that in mind, I have two lists… one sorted by date first, and after that, a list sorted by titles, if you want to go directly to where you know your show might be listed instead of trying to figure out all the noise…

The series finale of House has come and gone. For some it was a classic piece of House, leaving one confounded, while moving some other story line forward. To some it seemed to have left a piece or two of confusion behind.

(There will obviously be spoilers in here if you are one of the many 7-day time-shifted viewing audience, so you may wish to avert your eyes while continuing to read.)

Whaa?

Now that I’ve confused you, let’s talk about a few details from the House finale, because at this point, it feels like David Shore is taking a page from Ronald D. Moore’s book of finales and pulling things out of the air a bit.

You’ll see what I mean.

For those that might skim, KNOW THIS: I didn’t mind the finale. It was a sad thing indeed to see this as being the last episode.

One:

My first nit was that when I saw it adverted as a two-hour finale, I thought we’d be dealing with and wrapping up story lines that have built up through the season.

That wasn’t the case at all. The ep focused on only House. And it was only one hour of story. The first hour focused on cast and crew and highlighted the team behind the team.

To be honest, though it didn’t touch on story, I thought it was one of the most awesome pieces of acknowledgement to the team in the background.

Kudos.

-

Two:

When the building was burning down, did we ever get why House was there? Or how the fire started?

Supposedly how the fire started was alluded to.

-

Three:

Obviously House surviving the building collapse and subsequent explosion was standard Hollywood trickery. I’m good with that, but it feels like a stretch when I see the statement on his survival:

“There are a few seconds between the collapse and the explosion. He narrowly got out the back.”

The hobble-meister, without his cane, narrowly escaped. OK, if you say so.

-

Four:

Kutner’s gum on POTW’s shoe was just a joke to play on the viewing audience, having someone’s hallucination interact with the real world.

-

This is where I remind you to re-read my “know this” disclaimer near the top.

-

Five:

I don’t think it needed explaining really, when Foreman found House’s ID under his table leg. When he started grinning, you know Foreman knew House was alive and well.

Right?

-

Six:

The showrunners spent a moment considering the idea of really killing off Gregory House. It seemed to be something that would not have surprised this viewer.

But Shore said it was ixnayed because he wants the show to live on and it felt better to let him live.

-

Seven:

But!

Even though House lives on, I can’t help but wonder about his “wife” back home and what the events of his “death” did to her. They had hope there. But instead, House went in the standard House direction… the selfish one.

Plus, I can’t help but wonder that once he and Wilson are done with their road trip and Wilson passes away, then what?

If House is dead, House won’t have access to any of his money in any bank account? How will he survive in the post-Wilson era?

And that’s when Shore says,

What do you picture House doing once Wilson is dead?: I don’t know. That’s way down the road. And that’s not what it was about. The story is the story. And the story ends when the story ends.

Does that not remind BSG fans of the Starbuck ghost noise from that finale???

-

The above are my overly pragmatic perspective on the series finale of House… sure, I may have thought too much on some aspects, but heck, that’s the fun of this piece. Wondering about things I think you might also be wondering about too. So I thought I’d toss them out there…

[ tvline ]

Per a report from Latino-Review, the production for Iron Man 3 got a budget increase from $140M to $200M. That’s a lot of shwarma! (Oh, and they started principal filming today, 5-23-12)

But in all seriousness, I wonder where the extra $60M will go? Hire some more script folks? Add better visual effects? Longer movie?

Who knows… but what I do know is that the Shane Black directed movie will be the next big Marvel product out there and is the first film after The Avengers that will have the latest and newest clue to The Avengers 2. (Probably). Whether than be in the form of a new scene for TA2, or a tease for the next Marvel movie coming out.

Either way, Marvel has set the bar high with all their pre-Avengers movies and they can’t let it slide or they’ll never hear the end of it.

The other aspect is that these movies are bookmarks, or references. With The Avengers having come out, I noticed in my new DVD & Blu-ray release pieces, that some of the past Marvel movies have crept back up into the top-10 sellers each week. I’ve spotted Thor and Captain America pop back in there over the last few weeks, when previously, they did not habitat those top-10 seller charts.

So my hope is that they’re going the extra mile for ALL OF THE ABOVE. Teasers for Avengers 2 and something of quality to look back on.

Iron Man 3 will be starring Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark aka, Iron Man, and the news on the street is that the story line will have to do with the Extremis story line. (It’s due out in theaters May 2013)

That’s not only going to be pretty intense (which, visually (spoiler?), armor popping out of the bones, may very well require an extra $60M!) but also has me wondering if they’ll plotting on winding down and making this their last of three flicks?

Eh, we’ll see… I mean if you think about it, NOT! Iron Man will be in The Avengers 2. Right? Right.

If you follow BruSimm.com, you know I’ve had my issues with some of the spammer business practices from DISH TV. But aside from that, of late, you may have noticed the DISH TV ads where they toss out their product, with this thing called “The Hopper.” Or as that one character puts it, “The Hoppah!”

But I didn’t realize what it was because up until last week, The Hopper was never explained. It was just a term coined and tossed out into the ad. Be we found out when DISH announced the device’s capability during the annual “upfronts.” (Though I’m not sure that’s the best place to announce that!)

Turns out that The Hopper, actually called “Auto Hop,” is DISH TV’s newest DVR box with the technology to erase/skip the ads that it records. That way when you watch your DVR’d TV show, you don’t have to deal with the ads. But announcing something like this at the upfronts, where networks are pitching their product to advertisers, well, makes me scratch my head.

-

It’s A Disgruntled Acceptance

For the consumer, this is a huge step towards recognizing our disdain for the overly loud TV ad that fraks with our TV viewing experience. But to the TV industry, it threatens its very livelihood, and in a round-about way, the consumers very source of entertainment is also threatened.

My last sentence might seem confusing to some, so let me explain that one.

As you know, I’ve reported in previous years how the advertising industry drops around TEN BILLION dollars a year just on the primary networks each year. This let’s them shore up coveted ad time so they can pitch their wares to the TV watching consumer. As you groan about that idea, think of this:

First: They wouldn’t do it if it didn’t work.

Second: Without that kind of money, your favorite TV shows would not happen. Period.

Therein lies the issue.

-

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

The TV industry is in an uproar about DISH TV’s new tech, claiming such angst as how do you expect us to produce CSI without commercials, as CBS’s main man, Leslie Moonves inquired out-loud. Or NBC’s Ted Harbert (chairman) saying this is an insult to the television industry.

And to be honest, they have to ‘toe the line’ in their stance about this because without the monies from advertisers, the industry of television, and every single superfluous business that has sprung forth from it, will fade away.

With no money, shows go away because cast and crew are not free. They’re very expensive. Cable networks would fade, the internet streaming industry could suffer (IE: Netflix, TiVo) also. Sadly, we have to endure the TV ads because that’s where the real money comes from. Despite companies like Comcast making billions, the advertisers keep things rolling along so that TV production companies can pay actors $100k to $500k an episode and so forth.

If we didn’t have advertisers, we would end up with publicly funded TV. If you haven’t seen one of your local, publicly funded program stations, you should check it out and TRY to last through one or two shows.

-

That’s what I’m talking about!

Now skipping ads, like DISH TV is trying to pitch with their new DVR technology called The Hopper (Auto Hop), is not a new premise, but it’s obviously one that has been stuffed away into a corner where no one looks.

TiVo tried this about ten years ago, but digressed, though they’ve managed to present advertising to their viewers, even while fast forwarding through ads! A company called ReplayTV (who?) tried to take a stand and started skipping ads with their product and… well, they filed for bankruptcy in 2003.

I had a VCR back in the 90′s that detected ads and fast-forwarded over them. The technology is not that hard to deploy, considering HOW LOUD TV ads can be compared to the rest of the TV show.

(Did you know that TV Ads are no louder than the loudest part of any TV show? Or, as they try to pitch it, TV ads aren’t louder… technically… due to digital compression. Give me a break! My ears hurt. My neighbors can hear the ads and not the show. That IS louder, as far as most people are concerned.)

But…

DISH is saying that this new tech is going to help promote TV and it will help people check out new shows.

Seriously? I’m not sure where/when we’ll be able to squeak out extra hours from our days to watch new stuff… but it’s a cute pitch that makes is sound like they want to toe-the-line, and yet, while DISH says they’ll be able to turn more people on to new shows, they still spin that they are sensitive to the needs of networks.

Then the consumer anti-pitch: They back up their pitch about supporting networks with the premise that this feature will only be usable two hours after the end of prime-time each day. So what, we have to stay up until 10 p.m. every night to deploy this neat new tech? Actually, “Perfectly named that Auto Hop, this new feature edits out the breaks from those Primetime Anytime recordings starting at 1 am ”

-

Is This A DISH TV Sales Gimmick?

DISH TV has tried other sales tactics in the past and to be honest, my conjecture is that they’re hoping to nab some subscribers before they are forced to drop this ad-skipping tech.

We, the consumer have been fast-forwarding through ads for years, when allowed. And when we can’t, well, this consumer just thumps the mute button so my household isn’t blasted with the overly loud product pitches. It’s actually somewhat peaceful. The only ads I leave an are ads for The Avengers!

But what will matter is when DISH has to deal with their distribution deals with the networks. That is, if the tech is still around. I’m betting that by next season, this will all be old news. TV needs advertisers and they won’t play with someone who isn’t on board with them. (See ReplayTV) No matter what the consumer says.

Because in the end, many of us dislike being forced to deal with ads, but many more consumers not only are the silent majority, but they let the spin doctors convince them what to buy. And if ads did not work, they would not exist.

True Blood on HBO is premiering its fifth season, come June 10th, 2012. Once again the citizens of Bon Temps get to continue their stories in a world where vampires have come out of the coffin to co-exist with humanity. And with the vampires come all the other fantastic creatures of myth and lore!

I’ve got some clues to the front part of season five of True Blood, but some may consider it to be spoilers, so I’ll add them a bit later in this piece.

And season 5 of True Blood looks to be another fun and entertaining story. For me, I’m looking forward to seeing how Chris Meloni and Christopher Heyerdahl handle their new roles. From their promo images below, it looks exciting.

Do you know who Anthony Ingruber is? More than likely not. But someday, you might!

When someone is just starting out in the acting industry, it’s an interesting conundrum. I for one rarely take notice of folks who are not mainstream names. They glaze right on by me with nary a thought!

For example, do you remember The Avengers Chris Hemsworth from playing King Arthur in the 2002 episodes of Guinevere Jones? Or do you remember him from the 2006 edition of Dancing with the Stars? Or in Deal or No Deal? I had no clue. I don’t remember seeing him!

Or what about Tom Hiddleston (Loki) when he had a part in the 2001 TV movie, The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby?

Did you take notice of Johnny Depp in 1984′s in A Nightmare on Elm Street or on TV in Lady Blue, in 1985?

What about Zooey Deschanel in the 1999 movie, Mumford? Nah… (She’s the girl in the ad that asks SIRI if it’s raining outside, while she’s next to a window!)

This list could go on and on. When I see someone who is a mainstream star today and I see them in an early role of theirs, I smack my head and go “Oh my god!”

With that in mind, I thought I’d bring some attention to an actor by the name of Anthony Ingruber. He’s been in shows and movies you may or may not have heard of…

James Cameron’s Avatar as a Lab Technician, or Peter Jackson’s Over the Front. Or The People Versus George Lucas. And there’s the TV movie, Avalon High.

He’s also made appearances on TV in shows like Fraud Squad, Sensing Murder, & Karaoke High.

Over on his website, I particularly like his accent demonstration sound files… So as it stands, Anthony Ingruber is an up and coming actor. And who knows, in a few years, he may be a household name on the tip of our tongues like Joss Whedon’s name is right now. Just maybe.

anthonyingruber.com

The list looks like this:

• Men in Black III
• Chernobyl Diaries
• Moonrise Kingdom (limited)

-

First up, some box office noise:

BATTLESHIP Almost Takes The Weekend Box Office, NOT!

I think some of the headlines referencing this last weekend are bit harsh or overplayed about the box office this weekend. They seem to claim a failure at the box office for Battleship‘s domestic opening weekend. But, if it weren’t the the super-huge Joss Whedon mega-hot, The Avengers, it looks like Battleship might have won the weekend in the box office. But The Avengers took in another $55M this weekend, remaining in the top spot at the box.

Battleship was number 2, pulling in just over $25M and The Dictator dictated into third in the charts with a $17M take. Dark Shadows ($12.8M) and What to Expect When You’re Expecting ($10.5M) rounded out the top-5 spots at the box office.

The Hunger Games is holding on to a spot in the charts at seventh, having pulled in $3M this weekend, adding to it’s worldwide gross, bringing it to $392M.

Movie, Weekend, (Total)
The Avengers $55.1M ($457M)
Battleship $25.4M ($25.4M)
The Dictator $17.4M ($24.5M)
Dark Shadows $12.8M ($50.9M)
What to Expect When You’re Expecting $10.5M ($10.5M)

People are trying to over-analyze why Battleship didn’t do so good, declaring lack of interest by teens. I’m thinking a Marvel(ous) movie might have taken most of their business away! But that’s just me.

New Movies This Friday, May 25th, 2012:

• Men in Black III
• Chernobyl Diaries
• Moonrise Kingdom (limited)

-

Barry Sonnenfeld’s Men In Black 3 touts the standard alien fighting actor ensemble, with Will Smith reprising his Agent J role, Tommy Lee Jones as Agent K and Josh Brolin as a young Agent K.

Emma Thompson plays Agent O. (I’m not going to touch that one.)

In this third MIB film, “Agent J travels in time to MIB’s early years in the 1960s, to stop an alien from assassinating his friend Agent K and changing history.”

-

Chernobyl Diaries from Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity) and directed by past visual effects & CG supervisor Bradley Parker (Let Me In, We Own the Night), looks to be another found-footage, handi-cam movie from Peli. (Does he not do anything other than found-footage projects???)

In this flick, “Six tourists hire an extreme tour guide who takes them to the abandoned city Pripyat, the former home to the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. During their exploration, they soon discover they are not alone.”

-

In a limited release at the moment, looks to be the promising movie titled Moonrise Kingdom… it stars Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Harvey Keitel, Frances McDormand & Jason Schwartzman in a story about “A pair of young lovers flee their New England town, which causes a local search party to fan out and find them.”

-

Movie Production Status Update

Here’s what’s up with different movies and their production statuses…

· Iron Man 3 Pre-production
· The Expendables 2 Post-production
· The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 Post-production

(Looks like Abraham Lincoln was a busy boy! The first title, .vs Zombies, is a great example of consumer confusion and knock off movie productions! Zombies is from the infamous Asylum production house that Syfy keeps supporting!)

The TV series cancellation news is coming fast in the early part of this week. On Monday, after being mum for three months, Syfy finally fessed to canceling Sanctuary and right after that notice, THR also reported that Dog the Bounty Hunter was canceled by A&E! Gulp!

The series lasted eight hood-chasing seasons and I have to admit that when I had run out of things to watch, Dog was my go-to guilty pleasure! So I have to wonder, will the bail jumpers still get the same Christian lecture they used to get on-camera, now that the show is over? Or just a good beating for their trouble?

I guess Dog’s gang had their own internal issues to boot, with Duane Lee and Leland and Beth having some issues. But hey, it had a good run, considering how it got started… as an episode of an A&E produced series called Take This Job… a series about interesting or unusual jobs.

After seeing where the show has ended up, with all the gear and tough guy auras, I’d love to get a gander at that Take this Job episode and see how it all began!

[THR]

The first season of Grimm has come to a close with its first season finale and I must say, that the show has succeeded through the weeks of the first season, managed to have snagged a spot in my schedule. At first it wasn’t a real eye-catcher but it was of the genre type television I’ve been know to enjoy, so I thought, what the heck, let’s watch.

As always, there are details in this piece that could be considered spoilers…

At first I was wondering why all the monsters fear this Grimm, the man known as Nick Burkhardt, played by David Giuntoli (Aside from a 5-ep arc in Priveleged, this appears to be his first regular role). But I think the addition of Eddie Monroe (played by Silas Weir Mitchell (Prison Break, My Name is Earl)) has rounded out the story telling wonderfully.

From a cop whose destiny is slowly becoming known to him, to his sidekick who is helping him understand this destiny, a monster himself with many varied hobbies that help him stay focused and resist those urges. And don’t let that mild-mannered demeanor fool you. When he turns and fights, he’s a fully capable ally of Nicks. (As attested to the thug who had his arm ripped off early on in the season.)

And of course, whenever you see Sasha Roiz (Caprica, Warehouse 13) name show up in a cast, you know he’s probably going to be the smooth talking bad guy… or rough guy… and he definitely is here, playing police Captain Sean Renard, Nick’s boss!

As this first season of the show progressed along on NBC, we watched Nick learn about himself, and seemingly, get tougher as the season developed. I mean, he put some ass kicking down on those two reapers and I thought that was totally cool.

And as the season progressed, we also saw where he had to start considering the premise of maybe having to tell his police partner, Hank, and his wife.

And those two aspects have come to a head in the season finale. But after Hank’s encounter with Monroe, I’m not sure how he may take it. And with his wife being infected and Nick’s hand being forced to have to tell his wife, Juliette, well, that almost panned out. Except for the fact that she thought he was actually nuts and when he asked Monroe to “show” her, she passed out from the infection she was given by Nick’s old nemesis, Adalind Schade (Claire Coffee).

And then, the “Woman in Black” showed up, lurking in the background throughout the episode. It had me wondering what not trauma he was going to have to face off with next season. But she did show up and kill Nick’s last childhood nightmare bad guy, Akira.

The Woman in Black (played by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, (Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Without a Trace)) gets done thumping Akira and turns to Nick and says something to the effect, it’s me Nicki. And he stares and stares until he realizes that it’s his mom.

Dang! Is that a twisty surprise or what? Especially when we’ve been led to believe all season that both his parents are dead.

But now that the first season is in the books, Grimm has been renewed for a second season and I’m looking forward to seeing where the story goes. We still have Adalind on the loose. The Captain has yet to reveal his hand to Nick and what will Nick do with his wife? Will she remember him just being nuts or did she see enough of Monroe to realize what’s up? And what about Hank? Does he start losing it because of what he’s seen and will Nick try to help by showing him this world of his? I think that one can go either way!
