So are they or aren’t they in The Avengers?

MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS, Scarlett Jhansson and Jeremy Renner

The Joss Whedon directed movie, The Avengers, which is coming to movie theaters on May 4th, 2012, has everyone playing guessing games on who the bad guy is. Don’t all movies get fans going about one thing or another?  For all the speculation, it will be over when the movie comes out… or when early reviews hit the web.  But hence, so far, folks have been speculating that the primary forces of evil (Not the real bad guy I’m thinking) will be the Skrulls.  That rumor popped up a long time ago and isn’t going away.

But even though it’s a persistent rumor, just a few weeks ago Marvel producer Kevin Feige was even saying, in his best adamant mode, that the Skrulls are not the bad guy.  In fact he’s said that the Skrulls aren’t even in the movie.

“It’s not Skrulls, I’ve been clear about that. Beyond that, we want to hide it. The identity of the alien race is not impactful. It exists in the comic books, but we’re not setting up the Kree-Skrull war or anything like that.”

He also says there will be no Red Skull.

Night of the Templar

-Night of the Templar, is from the mind of Paul Sampson (Pictured below ladies!).  In his words about the movie:

“A Medieval Knight resurrects to fulfill his vow and bestow a blood-thirst vengeance upon the kindred spirits of those who betrayed him long ago. In the course of one night, identities will be revealed, destinies met, and a poetic justice of the macabre maniacally served.”

Paul Sampson (Abelar: Tales of an Ancient Empire) plays Lord Gregoire aka Jake McCallister and is also the director, writer and producer of Night of the Templar.

The cast of Night of the Templar includes David Carradine, in his last role prior to his passing away, Udo Kier (Melancholia), Billy Drago (Balls to the Wall, The Hills Have Eyes) and everyone’s favorite zombie killer from The Walking Dead, Norman Reedus.

If you follow Norman Reedus, you know he’s been in projects such as the The Boondock Saints franchise, The Conspirator, Pandorum, Blade 2 and many more projects.

This is a movie review with some reflections on the classic sci-fi movie, THX 1138, in another chapter of Cinema Static Classic Reflections.

THX 1138

Amazing but true:  I did not see THX 1138 until 2006.

I had been meaning to see THX 1138 for a long time but you know how it goes when you’re busy and distracted, you forget to watch important movies.   When I first sat down to watch this film, I was blown away by the fact that it was made in 1971.  The look of THX 1138 was way beyond what I usually think of as the late sixties/early seventies style for sci fi movies.  (I was also blown away by how young Robert Duvall looked, but that’s a different story.)

I saw the director’s cut and there were some scenes that George Lucas had tweaked or changed using technology that wasn’t available to him the first time around.  But that’s just a sidebar and doesn’t really intrude or change the true essence of the film.

THX 1138 is both the title and hero of the film which is divided into 3 acts and takes place some time in the future.

THX 1138 still

Humans live in a subterranean world where their every move is watched by monitors.  They are devoid of emotions by their constant (state regulated) diet of drugs, their individuality is non-existent; they don’t even have hair and we never even see the nameless, faceless authority who runs the place.  THX (Robert Duvall) works in a dangerous factory making the robots that police the society and he lives with a roommate, a woman named LUH (Maggie McOmie).

Brusimm Cinema Static Movie News

It’s early February and a few new theatrical trailers came out for The Amazing Spider-Man and Battleship.

Spider-Man opens July 3rd, 2o12 & Battleship opens May 18th, 2012.

Spider-Man is actually looking pretty good, while some the criticism for Battleship is the Transformers-like feel to it.  That and I swear, they’re using left-over footage from TF3‘s destruction of Chicago.  (Poor Chicago!)

Cinema Static Top-10 Movies & Box Office NumbersOver the last weekend, the three new movies took 3 of the top-5 spots in the weekend top-10 box office rankings while last week’s number 1 movie, The Grey, settled into third in the charts and No. 2 ranked Underworld: Awakening sidled into 5th.

Chronicle (w/ Dane DeHaan) performed surprisingly well actually, pulling in $22M, taking the No. 1 spot at the box office while The Woman in Black (with Daniel Radcliffe) was right on its tail, having pulled in $21M for being No. 2 in the chart of top-10 movies from last weekend.

If you’re interested, here’s my surprisingly positive movie review of Chronicle

The Grey had Liam Neeson pulling in less than half what the leaders pulled in, raking in $9.5M while the ‘rescue the big whales from under the ice’ movie, Big Miracle, with John Krasinski, managed almost $8.5M.  And that’s awesome, because I was really close to going to see that movie instead and it looked interesting enough for me to ponder going.

This is a DVD & movie review of the 2011 movie, Martha Marcy May Marlene.

Martha Marcy May Marlene movie poster

Martha Marcy May Marlene comes from Fox Searchlight Pictures and runs 102 minutes, and is rated R, and yes, it’s a heck of a title to try and remember!

It’s written and directed by Sean Dunkin (Afterschool) and stars Elizabeth Olsen (Silent House) as Martha, Sarah Paulson (The Spirit, Joss Whedon’s Serenity; on TV: Deadwood) as Martha’s sister, Lucy; Hugh Dancy (Confessions of a Shopaholic, Our Idiot Brother) as Lucy’s significant other, Ted & John Hawkes (Winter’s Bone; Eastbound & Down (TV series)) as cult leader Patrick.

-

Martha Marcy May Marlene is a surprisingly dark and captivating drama that focuses on a young girl named Martha (Olsen), who escapes from a cult and goes to live with her sister, Lucy (Paulson) and husband Ted (Dancy).  The trailers I’ve seen don’t quite do this dramatic piece justice, while the movie oozes this quiet, low-key tone of desperation for Martha.

This is a movie review of Chronicle.

Chronicle movie poster

Chronicle stars Dane DeHaan (True Blood, In Treatment), Alex Russell & Michael B. Jordan (Red Tails, Parenthood, Friday Night Lights) and is directed by Josh Trank.

I was worried about coming into Chronicle because of what looked like limited experience of the director, Josh Trank. His resume on IMDb shows his only directorial experience is the 2007 TV series, The Kill Point and after that, he fulfilled roles such as photo researcher, sound editor, and second unit director in projects prior to Chronicle.

No fear… Trank took this puppy and ran with it very well.

The film summary on IMDb reads:

“Three high school friends gain superpowers after making an incredible discovery. Soon, though, they find their lives spinning out of control and their bond tested as they embrace their darker sides.”
