Pacific Rim - Guillermo del Toro's monster movie

Despite the lack of much movie news, I’ve been quietly and patiently waiting for any update on Guillermo del Toro‘s giant monster (Kaiju) movie, Pacific Rim.  I am a very patient person.  Today I saw news that Lionsgate has released the official synopsis of the movie…   let’s check it out:

“From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi action adventure ‘Pacific Rim.’

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Oscar® nominee Guillermo del Toro (‘Pan’s Labyrinth’) is directing ‘Pacific Rim’ from a script by Travis Beacham (‘Clash of the Titans’). Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Mary Parent are producing, with Callum Greene serving as executive producer.

The film stars Charlie Hunnam (TV’s ‘Sons of Anarchy’), Idris Elba (‘Thor’), Rinko Kikuchi (‘The Brothers Bloom’), Charlie Day (‘Horrible Bosses’), and Ron Perlman (the ‘Hellboy’ films). The ensemble cast also includes Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke.”

As many readers of the site know, I love giant robots and I love giant monsters.   All fond memories from a childhood long gone.  So I’m already in a bit of anticipation.

Then there’s Toro’s brain!  After reading his book series, The Strain, I was captivated by how original he could become.  (He took the vampire mythos and turned it on its ear for me.)

Iron Man 3 newsWith the huge success of Joss Whedon‘s The Avengers, I’m guessing that Disney/Marvel, recognizing what a few dollars can do, have decided to crank up the budget of their next Marvel movie, Iron Man 3.

Per a report from Latino-Review, the production for Iron Man 3 got a budget increase from $140M to $200M.  That’s a lot of shwarma!  (Oh, and they started principal filming today, 5-23-12)

But in all seriousness, I wonder where the extra $60M will go?  Hire some more script folks?  Add better visual effects?  Longer movie?

Who knows… but what I do know is that the Shane Black directed movie will be the next big Marvel product out there and is the first film after The Avengers that will have the latest and newest clue to The Avengers 2.  (Probably).  Whether than be in the form of a new scene for TA2, or a tease for the next Marvel movie coming out.

Either way, Marvel has set the bar high with all their pre-Avengers movies and they can’t let it slide or they’ll never hear the end of it.

BATTLESHIP Review

May 18, 2012

I was almost talked out of going to see Battleship by some of what the mainstream critics were tossing out there.  I AM GLAD I DID NOT LISTEN! Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson, and a bunch others in a tale of aliens coming to Earth with ill-gotten intent on their lizard-like alien minds.  But [...]

IRON MAN 3 Lands James Badge Dale To Play Eric Savin

May 17, 2012

News on the street says that James Badge Dale (The Pacific, Rubicon) has landed the role of Eric Savin in Iron Man 3. The role is being called a villain role, but for those in the know about the character, Savin is a human that becomes a cyborg called Coldblood. Coldblood is more of a mercenary than a villain in the Marvel world, and past behavioral standards, aside from a few glitches, has not been a bad guy.
