Changing Twitter Names Reveals Feedburner’s Socialize Issues

Google Feedburner LogoIs your Feedburner Socialize Not Working? I discovered the other day that there are a few flaws with the Google Feedburner service called Socialize. One of the issues I discovered is that you cannot remove Twitter accounts once added to the service. I’ll explain later.

For those who don’t know, “Google Feedburner,” which distributes email newsletters for your RSS feed, has a service that can distribute posts from your feed to a Twitter account of your choosing. It’s called “Socialize,” under the “Publicize” tab. (Classic web interface.)

I’ve had several ‘newsletter’ options set up for different columns here on Brusimm.com.

I’ve had a change of heart about how I’ve referred to the website previously and decided to change a few Twitter account names.

Changing Twitter Account Usernames

Changing Twitter account names is not that hard. Just head into “settings” and you can type in a new “Username.” It’s as simple as that. I had lists, they did not follow my transition, but I did not lose my followers.

If you had third party apps distributing tweets for you, though they seem to keep up with the change, it’s best to refresh your data interface.

Feedburner’s Socialize

Under Google Feedburner, you can use the “Socialize” function to distribute your Feedburner RSS to a Twitter account. I’ve been using the service as such to distribute to a multiple number of Twitter accounts and I have been very pleased with the performance.

Things changed / broke after I changed the Twitter account names over on Twitter.

The Problems I Encountered with Socialize

When I changed my Twitter username, Socialize appeared to have kept up with my change because it showed the new username. It also showed the old username. But alas, something was afoul. The old username is completely gone yet Feedburner still had it in its database. My ‘sociliaze’ tab had both the new and old Twitter usernames, but it was no longer transmitting to the new one.

My first thought was that this can’t be that hard to fix, but then I discovered that I can’t delete any Twitter accounts in the Feedburner database that I’ve connected to. I tried disconnecting (disallowing) Feedburner’s access from Twitter, and then reinitializing the authorization, but that did not work.

The big hang-up with the process, which Google admits to, is that Twitter accounts can be added to the “Socialize” function, but they’ve not applied any processes to be able to remove Twitter accounts.

Additional Issues Crop Up

After renaming my Twitter usernames (I did this on a few accounts, a couple associated with this site) I then started experiencing huge delays between publishing a post and seeing Feedburner republishing the post to Twitter. Feedburner notes that their RSS updates pull your feed every 30 minutes. I’ve had near instantaneous posting up until now. After my “tricky” new change, I’m now seeing delays of up to 3 hours in getting my feeds updated.

=

I’m a bit disappointed that Feedburner can provide you a means to connect to your Twitter account yet not have a process that will let you remove it. In programmer speak, it sounds more like a kludge than a well thought out option. They need to address this so when people run into this wall, it can be dealt with instead of spending a day or two chasing down dozens of unanswered BB google support forums and such.

Everything Happens for a Reason

I like to believe that everything happens for a reason. This is pushed me to understand I should not be so dependent on Google for my content delivery. It’s forced me to look at other options and there are a few interesting options out there that may pay off for everyone involved.

Possible solution: transfer the feed to another email address. And rehook it up. That’s what I did. One other problem with socialize is that all of your feeds are published to the same twitter feed (i think).

I have removed my old account from {Google’s Connected Accounts} but it didn’t work either.

I’m so pissed off…

Solutions anyone?

Bruce, not working for me, i have to make another twitter account, add it back to feedburner then it works out normally like charm.. bad thing: LOSING ALL of my Followers.

Anyone: Dont let this one happen to you, first: Think of a good twitter username, and never change it, ever! so really deeply think of the username before you add it to your feedburner. (at least until they fix it)

and next time: only ‘Astried’ please.. alright Mr. Bruce Simmons? ;p
