Chile Earthquake – A Scary and Sad Thing, Some Reference Sites

Once again, another earthquake strikes with such ferocity that only mother nature could be the source.  The Chile Earthquake that took place this morning at 1:38 a.m. is a truly sad and scary event.  (USGS World Events over 5.)

The devastation is only something seen in a frightening science fiction future look when the planet has been wasted by the ravages of human nuclear destruction.

This 8.8 magnitude earthquake is definitely a scary proposition.  For those of us who have been through them, I’ve seen different attitudes but there’s no stopping them.  There’s no predicting them.  You can only be ready for them with Earthquake Survival kits (Deluxe 2-Person Survival Kit on Amazon).

I’ve survived and seen some interesting things via earthquakes.  The Sylmar quake, the Northridge quake, Landers quake just to name a couple.  Hell, right now I’m living about a mile from the San Andreas Fault.  (Gulp!)

Reports are saying the Chile Earthquake lasted around 90 seconds and they’ve had numerous 6 point magnitude events after the fact.  Cripes, their aftershocks are on par with some “big ones” we experience.  On the bright side, once you get over 6, the strength is more or less a function of time.  But damn.

And there is no “holding on.”  Via Twitter reports, we’ve heard how they were bouncing around… and that’s true.  There’s no getting your feet under you if you’re not in just the right spot.  You just get slapped around, hoping your furnishings won’t be the end of you.

Now we have tsunami warnings for Hawaii and other coasts.    At least there, we have warning, and people can be prepared.

It’s 9 a.m., CA time.  Chile just had their 30th major (5.5+) aftershock.  My god, I can’t imagine that.  Your world, your earth, unleashed, not knowing when it will snap at you… again.  The Earth, the ground that you’ve become accustomed depending on, now in upheaval.

This SoB’s thoughts are with the poor folks that have endured this newest earthquake.

We suffered a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) hit the other day. It was a big one.

The full moon tidal pressures and a hit from the Sun are the perfect storm for earthquakes.
