Consumer Bits on Brusimm 200w logo, [Consumer News, advice and reviews]This is a consumer service review of a a chimney sweep that was a highly disappointing experience.

So last November I felt I had to have my chimney cleaned out because I could smell the smoke doubling back into the house.  I looked at some online reviews and balancing out reviews and cost, I chose the Menlo Park based Chimney Cricket.

I called and made the appointment.  It was for late evening a few days after the call.

He showed up, and was pretty chatty, but was setting up while chatting.  That involved setting up the plastic protector at the mouth of the fireplace to keep stuff from dusting the living room.

He went on the roof and seemingly did his thing.  When he was done, my neighbor wanted to employ him for her chimney.  He said he would bring me a receipt when he was done with my neighbor.

A few hours later I found out that he left after working on my neighbors chimney, telling her he was going to bring her a receipt after seeing me.  But he never came back by.

The next day I called him, asking for a receipt and he said he would bring it by later that day.

That dance happened three or four days in a row.  I gave up.  I got the job done, so what does it matter?

Well, a few months later it seems that the cleaning didn’t go as well either.  I had a window fan set up to pull air through the house and if I don’t open enough windows, we infect the house with chimney smoke.

So Chimney Cricket seemed to want some undocumented income (AKA no receipts) and didn’t even do the most thorough job.

Two thumbs down on Chimney Cricket gang.  I don’t know if this is their regular mode of operation, but some of the online reviews seem to back me up.
