Christopher Nolan & Zack Snyder Looking for Superman Man of Steel

Superman by Sean Izaakse

Things are going crazy, in a good way for Christopher Nolan right now.  Scripts for The Dark Knight Rises* are slated to be in the actors hands in January, but also of import, is that Nolan and Zack Snyder have started looking for their next Superman for Superman: Man of Steel.

Warner Bros. is open to the idea of a relative newbie and making a star out of him.  Him being someone in the age range of 28 to 32 and they have to be ready for production which may very well start in June of 2011.

The production date for Superman: Man of Steel is a very important date to have in your head because when you start reading the rumor mills and what-if mills about who should, could or would play Superman, keep in mind that if the movie starts production in June, that will also be around the time that network studios are filming their prime-time dramas.  Where am I going with this?  No mainstream TV star will be able to pull off both productions.  Unless something fantastic happens and a star is given the time.  But that may not be likely.  With that said, I’ve already seen conjectures that are pulling up stars from present TV series still in their production runs.  (Just sayin’.)

This is the first time that a new Superman movie is on my radar as a movie that I will more than likely go see.  Why?  Because of Christopher Nolan, David Goyer & Zack Snyder.  What a seriously heavy-hitting team-up if you ask me.

Why another Superman Movie?

We’re getting another Superman movie so Warner Bros. can keep the rights to the franchise.  If they don’t meet certain time-frames regarding movies about Superman, they lose those rights.  That’s why we’ve seen multiple actors playing Superman fight multiple actors playing Lex Luthor.

Which, BTW, seeing these two origins and duking it out (so to speak) is old and an instant fail for me.  Not to mention that if the movie is ill-received, it can be an image curse on the poor actor.  Ask Brandon Routh.

Brandon Routh

Brandon Routh

Ever since I’ve met Brandon Routh a few years ago, I was impressed how mellow and low-keyed he is.  I was also impressed how he never defers to his Superman role, unless asked.  And if you’ve ever noticed, almost every single article that ever talks about Brandon Routh, does so as they announce him as the last Superman, from the 2006 movie.  I think the poor guy needs a break and has to start getting recognized for something… really, anything else.

Seriously.  Routh has been in 11 movies since (Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Unthinkable, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World to mention a few.) and has a recurring role as Daniel Shaw in NBC’s Chuck.

Sorry, I had to diverge on that sore-spot in my head on the guy.

The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight Rises lq

In a quick quip about Nolan’s third Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises, Michael Caine, who seems to be either a huge news leak or the semi-official press guy for the project, stated that in regards to the production scehdule of The Dark Knight Rises, ‘Script in January, shoot in May, finish in November.’

Casting is still a secret, but per the semi-official press guy, casting news will be coming soon!
