Did JASON STATHAM Really Dis Marvel? Should Fans Dis Statham?

Jason Statham in Redemption 1

First we heard that Jason Statham was in negotiations for a part in the Netflix series, Daredevil. Then we heard that because of that inside scoop about the negotiations, the talks fell apart, leaving neither party with any kind of advantage in the contractual talks.

Then there were press tidbits from Marvel Television saying the negotiations with Jason Statham were rumors.

Now, not more than 24 hours later than those events, we’re hearing that via one website’s article title, that Jason Statham was bashing Marvel movies in an interview with an Italian website. And other larger websites started going with this, saying anyone could do a Marvel character film.

WTH? Let’s clear up this bulls*!

Initially the sound byte made me a little confused about the timing of all of it, since first we heard that he was allegedly trying to get into a Marvel project and now he was bashing Marvel.

His dig at Marvel (and hence, Disney???) included their production reliance on green screen technology, stunt doubles and special effects. He even goes further by saying,

“I could take my grandma and put her in a cape, and they’ll put her on a green screen, and they’ll have stunt doubles come in and do all the action,” Statham replied. “Anybody can do it.”

Then we see that back in 2008 he said he wanted to play Daredevil and then there’s the use of green screen and stunt doubles in some of his previous movies. On wanting to play a role, I have to wonder how many other actors said that they want a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? We are always seeing what I call “web hits bait,” talking about actors saying they want to play roles in different movies or TV shows.

I’m not sure what I’m seeing here. Was Statham in negotiations or not? I can’t be sure, but the original source that broke the information is usually pretty reliable with their information.

And if he was in negotiations with Marvel, why would he be bashing Marvel in an interview? (I actually don’t think he was bashing… read on my faithful readers.)

It is all very confusing, regardless, but what could be happening here? Are these new, nasty sound bytes just subterfuge tactics to throw fans off the trail of actual negotiations between Statham and Marvel? Or is he that fickle in his dealings with entertainment entities?

So I started looking around the web to see what I can find about Statham.

To preface my findings, I met the man a few years back at a social event and when I had a chance to exchange a few words with him, he took the time to be pretty cordial to this no-name guy hanging out at his party. (Trust me, just because it is the celeb’s party does not mean they are always cordial.)

First, I can find nothing but good things being said about him. Pragmatically speaking he seems to be quite the nice person or he’s being real consistent in his public persona. (I have to look at both sides of the coin here.)

Second, I found that he is being consistent about his perspectives on green screen work. Back in 2013, in a piece about how the industry needs to recognize stunt men, the unsung heroes, as he put it, he went on to say that

“…poncy actors who are then inserted into action scenes by visual effects artists. Then you have some guy standing in front of a fucking green screen screwing his face up pretending like he’s doing the stunt. To me, it’s like a farce. I have a real frustration with that because I know these coordinators. I train with them all the time and they are incredibly talented.”

{FYI: Poncy: Pretentious or affected.}

Plus his take on green screen work and the like could still support his wanting to be Daredevil, because there is very little in the way of special effects to bring that character to life… no CGI after effects like armor or god-like powers and what not. It is just a man in a suit pounding on people. Which is something Statham is good at.

Thus his latest statement about Marvel and grandmas in capes in front of green screens just seems to be a consistent perception of his opinion on this aspect of movie making. That he’s more of a classical, old-school fan of movie making.

The sound bytes seem like they’re making him personally bashing Marvel. Or at least that was what I thought I was reading between the lines.  At this point I’m starting to lean towards embellished titles just to get web hits.

Then again, if he really is slamming Marvel, then it is easy enough for all of Marvel fans to totally dis any future movies Jason Statham makes. And why would he take that chance and do that? Marvel fans, as proven by The Avengers movies, have a ton of money to spend… or not spend.

I am leaning more towards what he said as a misconstrued statement he’s making to reiterate his take, then that is all it is. I am almost expecting one more headline to start circulating to clear up this noise.

Maybe it is just a redirect while Statham and Marvel get back to the negotiation table for some role he is eyeballing. I have seen that before in a multitude of situations, from NASCAR, NFL and Hollywood. And it would be the perfect redirect, throwing everyone off the tail of his pursuing a role in this ever expanding cinematic universe.

All we can do is see and time will be the telling factor.
