DRAG ME TO HELL – A Real Quick Review

I went out of my way to watch the Sam Raimi driven horror flick titled Drag Me To Hell. I felt like it had received some decent publicity and wanted to catch it.

I had actually bought the DVD, but don’t worry. Hollywood Video around these neck of the woods is going out of business and I bought it for the same price as if I would have rented it on On Demand. I’m glad I didn’t pay anything more for it, if that says something.

The story summary is that A loan officer ordered to evict an old woman from her home finds herself the recipient of a supernatural curse, which turns her life into a living hell.

Drag Me to Hell isn’t bad, but it came along and it felt like just about any other horror flick with the standard number of attempts to try and shock you visually.

The shockers were mostly fluid-like ooze dripping into victims mouths and Sam Raimi did what he did on the Spider-Man movies, if you recall some scenes where the main character or focus of a scene would find themselves in a sort of super-slow-motion type moment. Sam Raimi did the exact same thing in Drag me To Hell. Dude, break out and break up the routine!

I was disappointed it wasn’t much more. It didn’t give me any real shocks and felt mostly predictable. Though I wasn’t sure what to expect of the ending, it didn’t surprise me either when events unfolded in the end.

On my scale of 1-10, It wasn’t memorable (-1), relied on standard attempts at shock (-1), nothing incredibly new added to the horror genre (-1), not impressed (-1) but I didn’t feel like I wasted my time. I needed the writing break, so it passed muster there.

I give it a 6 out of 10.

As a comparison, over on IMDb, 44,820 votes gave it an average of 7.2.

Drag Me To Hell starred Alison Lohman & Justin Long.
