Final Season of EUREKA - Season 5

While I was digging up news on new titles coming out to DVD, I came across an interesting bit about the last season of Eureka and the DVD for season five… or more specifically, the timing of the release.

As we all know, the present season of Eureka, starring Colin Ferguson,Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Erica Cerra, Neil Grayston, Joe Morton, Niall Matter and more… is its last. And from what I can tell, its series finale episode is slated to air on July 16th, 2012… barring any unplanned network changes and such.

Then I noticed something that I have never seen before… the DVD for season five of Eureka is due out that Tuesday, July 17th, 2012. That’s the day after the finale! I don’t believe I’ve ever seen that kind of home entertainment product release scheduling for any show or movie I know of.

For fans, this is awesome. Instead of the usual wait for a show to come to disc, you can have it the next day in stores or pre-order it and have it show up in your mailbox a few days after that last episode.

But it had me wondering.

Now that doesn’t mean this kind of DVD release schedule hasn’t happened previous to this. Maybe it has. I just happened to notice it because of my focus on this series. But I have to wonder how this could be?

My first thought, is pure conjecture, but has to do with the timing of things.

When Comcast took over NBC, aka, Syfy, they were pretty quick to cut their losses by cancelling Eureka. I’m thinking they want to simply clear their books as fast as possible of this show so they set up the release date for the next day after the series finale. I could be totally wrong.

But that’s about all I can think of which has no real substance of evidence except my suspicions of the corporate world of the billion dollar businesses entity. If anyone’s seen this kind of timing before, let us know! It could help dispel my suspicious mind.

Any how, Eureka is slated for release to DVD on July 17th. Check it out on Amazon: Eureka Season 5

Paul… I do always ponder the cost of pay raises (cast, crew, etc.) versus the livelihood of a TV series. Pay raises and declining viewer numbers are always a bad mix. But…

I don’t think anyone in their right mind would ever want a pay decline! I would imagine that as they see the number graphs starting to cross paths, (ratings down, wages up), that they start to put out feelers for their next job or task.

But that’s a pure guess on my part. -B

From a marketing POV doesnt it make sense, they can advertise the DVD in the last episode and people won’t have to wait for it.

Personally I am more likely to watch it on Netflix than on DVD but that’s just me.

It’s a shame it is going, but as everyone in TV says the cost kill as many shows as lack of viewers do. Maybe if all the actors had taken a pay cut they would have done a few more series.
