Joss Whedon's DOLLHOUSE

Just thought I’d pass along the reminder that the series-finale of Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse takes place on January 22nd, 2010.  The final episodes leading up to this last day will be

  • January 8th: “Getting Closer.”
  • January 15th: “The Hollow Men.”
  • The series finale on January 22nd: “Epitath Two: Return.”  Felicia Day and Adair Tishler guest star.

It will be the end of a much tormented science fiction, fantasy TV series run that never quite caught on with the general viewing public.

I even had a feeling that despite the hard-core fan-base wanting Joss’s latest television effort to succeed, even some of us were hard pressed to really enjoy Dollhouse at times.  Sometimes the show just dragged for me and at other times it hit on all 10 cylinders of its 8-cylinder engine.  It just didn’t revv up enough to catch a foothold.

It didn’t help when viewers called it things like a show about trafficking.

JOSS WHEDON

It was an odd, or foreign concept that mixed up the Nielsen viewers and in the end, they’re lack of acceptance pretty much set up this closing scenario.  Not to mention that even though Fox wanted to lose it’s maligned image of how they’ve handled Joss Whedon projects in the past, they created a new … malign-ment, if you will, when they dropped the even more popular Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chroniclesto give Joss a 2nd season of Dollhouse.

ELIZA DUSHKU in DOLLHOUSE

Eliza Dushku gave her all in filming the closing episodes.   Which even included Dushku fracturing her arm!  Keep in mind that Dushku is working on her own project after this.

In one interview, Joss Whedon called it for what it was while still being nice about Fox Television.  Check out Cinema Static’s closing thoughts on Dollhouse.  And so far, unlike other projects of Joss’s, there are presently no plans to turn Dollhouse into a comic., though they had kicked some interesting websites into gear supporting Dollhouse’s closing weeks.

Associated Viral Dollhouse Websites:

One such website is the Rossum Corporation website.  There was also the Spectrinsite.  But that’s been reduced to a one-pager now.  (To get to other Spectrin based pages, check outSpectrin’s mission page.  There are other links there.)

This site was also part of the viral campaign, Alex in the City.  At first glance, Alex might have been Rossum’s first “doll.”  This is “Alex’s” Twitter account, http://twitter.com/AlexfromPR.

Another site is called DitchTheTech, which started out as an opposition group against Rossum.  Now Ditch is a thank note, with various Twitter addresses of those involved.

And yet another site, Wipe the Future, was another anti-Rossum site, but is now a Dollhouse themed site that points you to various charitable organizations. (Links at the bottom of the page.)

It’s too bad.  They built up a bunch of viral Dollhouse websites, and the effort that went into these websites is pretty cool.

But Alas:

ALAN TUDYK as Alpha on DOLLHOUSE

Yet we did get to see more of Alan Tudyk under the guidance of Joss Whedon, and that’s never a let-down.  Alan Tudyk does have a Sundance projectout right now.  (Hey Alan!  Thanks for squeezing some time out of your busy schedule to reprise Alpha for us!)

SUMMER GLAU

We even got to see more of Summer Glau, appearing in Dollhouse.  Summer seemed more animated than other roles I’ve seen her in.  But not by much.

~

We’ve seen many others grace the screen as guests of Dollhouse, like Alexis Denisof, Keith Carradine, Mark SheppardFelicia Day.

We can only hope everyone involved in the show can move on to future projects.  I’d like to see Tahmoh Penikett stretch his wings more than he did here.  Harry Lenix is someone I enjoyed watching while being humorously puzzled by Fran Kranz.  My poor wife will be sad to not see Enver Gjokaj anymore as many guys might also miss Dichen Lachman.  Not to mention the entertaining Amy Acker.  Everyone will miss her tormented characterization.

There were many more, but those immediately stick out in my mind at this moment.

Farewell DollhouseCinema Staticsays farewell to Joss Whedon’s latest television project.  If it’s his last, I wouldn’t be surprised!  Yet it does not mean I cannot be sad about it.

Farewell and pleasant dreams Dollhouse. Shall we take a nap for a while?
