On the Discovery press web page, they’ve posted a subtle but very important notice for fans of the Joss Whedon created television series, Firefly.
Firefly is a sci-fi / western series starring Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres and more that aired in 2002.
If I could extrapolate from what I’m seeing, it seems that the Discovery Science Channel may have bought the rights to the entire series to air it. That’s right, the Discovery Science Channel. I guess the Syfy Channel somehow missed out on this one. Go figure.
According to the press release, Firefly will start airing on on March 6th at 8 p.m. Eastern Time USA. If you’ve never seen this show and you now have a chance to, Cinema Static recommends that you at least give it a try and see what you think. I’m a bit jealous that some of you may very well be seeing this series for the very first time.
Snippet of the press release:
Joss Whedon, Emmy Award-nominated creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel and an Academy Award nominee for Toy Story, brings his unique and multi-talented skills to FIREFLY, a sci-fi/western adventure series.
Set 500 years in the future, in the wake of a universal civil war, FIREFLY centers on the crew of Serenity, a small transport spaceship that doesn’t have a planet to call home. Captain Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), a defeated soldier who opposed the unification of the planets by the totalitarian governed Alliance, will undertake any job – legal or not – to stay afloat and keep his crew fed.
Mal’s crew includes his fiercely loyal second-in-command Zoe (Gina Torres), who served beside him in the war and owes him her life; Wash (Alan Tudyk), the ship’s easygoing pilot and Zoe’s husband; Kaylee (Jewel Staite), the ship’s young and effervescent engineer; and Jayne (Adam Baldwin), a tough mercenary whose loyalties lie with Mal – for now.

LOL… good point Set271. What’s this world coming to?
“…but very important notice for fans…”
Not really that important for fans is it? The show is eight years old and has been available at on DVD for years at negligible cost for years. So the majority of fans can watch Firefly whenever they want and without commercial breaks. As for acquiring new fans, well, again with the eight years old and DVD availability plus the concept of loaning DVDs to friends.
Hooray!!! Can’t wait – even if it is reruns. I hope they put it back into production at some point.
Yes Bob, sometimes fans don’t buy the DVD’s. Thus they take what opportunities they get and enjoy the show when it shows up on TV. I never really took to the series until I saw it back in ’07. I then soaked it up every chance I had when it aired somewhere. I now have the series on DVD but it’s because I saw it that I bought it. So yes Bob, for some, it could be important. Not everyone has the bucks to buy the series.
yooneeknaem: As much as we’d all love to see it go back into production, as Craig Engler put it, with most of the major cast & creative team on their own career paths it’s most unlikely. He created an incredibly convincing / depressing argument back when he addressed this issue. We have the magic of what we have.
I’m going to have to agree with Bruce, I didn’t discover the show until 07-08, and now own the series both on DVD and Bluray, and am still willing/excited to watch the show on TV, even if I have to endure commercials.
Also, as sad as I was to learn that Firefly was no more, I’ve come to love ABC’s “Castle” w/ Nathan Fillion, and I wouldn’t want to see that show go off the air.
Syfy didn’t miss anything. They’ve shown the series several times, as has a couple other channels. Science is likely showing it because it’s cheap to license.
I discovered it after Serenity and snatched it (the entire series on disc) up at that certain big box store for $40 and it is now in my vault and my mainframe. Streaming alongside Babylon 5, Space 1999, UFO, and all the various Treks me and the dog enjoy Firefly, even if the wife doesn’t, allthough I think the dog likes the popcorn equally. Long live HTPC.
Unless they are making new episodes (which is extremley unlikely), this isn’t particularly important since its already on DVD
It may not be particularly important for you Mack. But there are those that don’t buy DVD’s and whose only access is to repeated airings of Firefly on TV. For them, it’s very important.
its a great show. it will be welcomed on my tv even if its just reruns. itll almost certainly be a step up from anything else on the air….. im afraid im another one of those that discovered the series only after it had been cancelled. its really a great story, and its a shame the whole thing was never told properly. probably no chance, but new episodes would be awesome…..
As a huge fan of Firefly, who also lives on a budget that prevents purchasing entire series of things that even though I love them, hey, I’ve seen them, I am glad when Firefly airs again on any channel. That said, I am not pleased with the way the Science channel is acting as if these are new episodes. My heart nearly leaped into my throat when I saw that the first time, and then it happened again, when I was half asleep, late at night. Twice I’ve though, oh WOW! Dream come true! Only to feel sad, annoyed, and manipulated (and stupid the second time, for falling for it twice!). If only Whedon hadn’t gone with Fox TV, who mishandled the promotion of the show, and botched what is probably the best SF to ever come to television. What a shame. Considering Whedon’s talents (head in the sand about Dollhouse) I hope he can do it again for us, but I really hope it isn’t on Fox TV. I wonder how he’d do on something like USA? Anyway, yeah, new episodes would be so great! Longing for them…
