Dwayne Johnson in G.I. JOE RETALIATION

Paramount’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation was set to go to theaters in June 2012. But then we heard from the studio that they were delaying the release until 3-29-13 because they wanted to convert the movie to 3D.

I cringed when I saw that G.I. Joe: Retaliation was going to be post-converted to 3D because in most cases, 3D is not warranted and it’s just creating fundage fluff when 3D tickets cost almost 60% more than regular 2D movie tickets. But it is about the money and consumers are willing to spend it, so it’s seemingly something that isn’t going to fade away too fast these days. Plus it’s been noted how overseas, other countries are building a slew of new 3D theaters. (Can we say Joss Whedon’s move, The Avengers, might have had a mild impact on the industry? I’m jazzed my favorite movie is in the record books, but they did it via huge ticket prices for 3D, IMAX and what not.)

But anyhow, the news about the 3D conversion got me to the point of not caring about this now delayed movie that stars Dwayne Johnson, Channing Tatum and others.

In fact it put me on the defensive about the project.

But then the real deal of why the movie release date was pushed back came to the surface, and now it not only gets more interesting, but makes more sense!

It seems that Paramount has multiple issues with the movie.

Channing Tatum in G.I. JOE RETALIATION

First up… Channing Tatum’s character gets killed off early on in the movie.

But with Tatum’s name climbing the ranks of popularity, Paramount has decided to take the massive rewrite approach and not have him killed off.

That’s because early screen tests with test audiences were showing that there is not major interest in Tatum

Paramount also doesn’t want to face off against some of their other competition like MIB3, or more significantly, up against Tatum’s other project, Magic Mike, a movie based on Tatum’s male stripper past.

Or, would it be that they don’t want to be looking at a huge crash in their subsequent weeks after opening, with The Dark Knight Rises opening just after they do?

You have to ponder a huge amount of details about this change, and it is huge. Movie-goers are rarely flip-flopped on like this, and to some degree, it is a bit of a disservice to the fans.

And for what, a fun popcorn flick that might do well enough at the box office to warrant its existence? Or are they banking on Bruce Willis, Dwayne Johnson, Tatum, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Stevenson, Walton Goggins and more?

Eh, it is what it is and fans of the G.I. Joe movie franchise will have to wait just a little bit longer to see this flick, which apparently, now, will be in over-priced 3D come March 29th ,2013. If they even keep their word about this date!
