Godzilla 2014 movie promo poster

I just came across some pretty great news for the upcoming new Godzilla movie from Legendary Pictures.  Word on the street is that Mary Parent is coming on board the production team, and Frank Darabont has been pulled in by Legendary for a script rewrite.

Woot!

First thought that comes to mind is how Mary Parent was a huge Joss Whedon backer, way back in the days when Joss was not as “cool” as he is today.  So there’s that.  She’s also been involved in movies like The Kingdom & Role Models and just came off of jobs for Pacific Rim and Noah.

I like that she’s on board the movie.

Then there’s the addition of Frank Darabont coming on board for rewrites.  This too, is pretty exciting news.

Darabont’s participation (plus Parent) makes me feel like Legendary is taking this reboot pretty serious.  For those that don’t know, Darabont’s resume includes

  • The Shawshank Redemption,
  • The Green Mile,
  • The Majestic,
  • Collateral,
  • The Mist,

and of late,

  • The Walking Dead.

So yea, I’m pretty juiced by this.  Though this is the second rewrite effort Legendary has put into the movie.  All this, while being directed by Monsters director Gareth Edwards.  (Monsters was a great movie.)

On the down side, Legendary wants to drop two producers, but these two brought the Toho rights to Legendary.  And when Deadline reported the issue, they said that both Legendary and the two ousted producers were presenting “no comments.”

That can’t be good.

There’s more detail over at Deadline if you’re interested. But that’s my latest Godzilla movie news update!  Hey, at least it’s news moving forward.

The Huffington Post also touched on the movie, saying that at one point, Joseph Gordon-Levitt & Henry Cavill were being looked at for the movie, but that window of opportunity has come and gone, depending on how you read various sources.
