This writer is a Godzilla fanatic! As a child, I remember setting my alarm for god-awful hours so I can get up and watch any movie with Godzilla in it. I’ve seen as many Godzilla movies that I could including all the other spawned off monster movies. I’ve even seen the spoofed Mystery Science Theater 3000′s versions. (MST3K Scene: Man pointing at sky yelling “What’s that?” Tom Servo yells out” “It’s your finger and it’s pointing at something!”) In fact, Gojira is my management role model. (Along with Predator.) “Do me wrong, I’ll stomp on ya then barbecue you for good measure!”
The latest Godzilla project that graced the movie screens wasn’t a disappointment as much as it wasn’t fulfilling to see Roland Emmerich’s slightly shrunk down new-fangled 1998 version. Why I wasn’t disappointed was that it was a new Godzilla movie, and like I’ve learned in my younger days, sometimes you have to take what you can get if no one else is going to do anything. That, and I finally was able to have my body shaken in reverberation in a decent sound system by Godzilla’s trademark roar.
Sure, the Emmerich / Matthew Broderick project brought in almost $400 million worldwide. I can’t help but wonder how much more it could have made if they tried to stick a bit closer to the intent of the original project.
As it stands, now that Legendary Pictures has come to a financial agreement with Toho, Godzilla is slated for a 2012 release and is being brought to us in a joint project by Legendary Pictures & Warner Bros and will be focused on the Toho CO.’s 1954 version as their launch pad and not the 1998 Sony version. Which gives me hope it will be bigger than Cloverfield.
They’re presently looking for a director and are looking to extend the franchise from the original’s intent, as the fans would want to see it. (Ah, the magic coined phrase that gets our attention!)
Since I’m an addict, I’m looking forward to pretty much anything that may come out that can bring Godzilla back to the silver screen. Pretty much. My only request is that if the studios try to eff it over with 3D, film it in 3D and don’t eff it up the the cheap-ass post-production 3D that pretty much ruins 3D and the movie, for everyone.
