An update on Guillermo del Toro

Since I have become appreciative of Guillermo del Toro‘s work this last year, I’m always interested in things he’s working on. The items that caught my eye that inspired this supposed short piece were notes on At the Mountains of Madness & Hellboy 3.

But first…

Pacific Rim

Pacific Rim movie mini teaserPacific Rim, his latest monster movie that I’ve been following, is due to start shooting five weeks from now. Pacific Rim is basically a giant robot vs. giant monster kind of flick that will be starring Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Idris Elba, Max Martini & Clifton Collins Jr..

Pacific Rim has already had it’s release date changed and is now due out in movie theaters in May of 2013.

Guillermo del Toro‘s other projects include exec producing Mama, starring Jessica Chastain & Dreamworks Animation’s Rise of the Guardians. Rise of the Guardians is sort of like Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, except, well, it’s where Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, Jack Frost and the Sandman face off together against the Bogeyman. The cast/voice power includes Hugh Jackman, Jude Law, Isla Fisher, Dakota Goyo, Chris Pine & Alec Baldwin.

Guillermo del Toro’s other efforts include having penned/contributed to the screenplays for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Due out 2012) and The Hobbit: There and Back Again (2013). Being directed by Peter Jackson, the cast includes Luke Evans, Hugo Weaving, Evangeline Lilly, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood plus the venerable character-actor Andy Serkis.

At the Mountains of Madness

At the Mountains of MadnessIf it’s one thing del Toro has been having a hankering for, it’s been to create his adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s Antarctic terror tale At The Mountains of Madness. On and off we’ve seen news on this movie and the latest real news last year was that At the Mountains of Madness was put off for the time being, from budget complications and possibly getting a movie rating that del Toro didn’t agree with. (At least from what I understood from the various articles.)

But it’s not left del Toro’s mind.

He’s indicated he’s still interested, but after Pacific Rim, it looks like he wants to do something a little different before pursuing At the Mountains of Madness… if he gets the backing. But then again, he’s also noted that everytime he gets working on it, it blows up in his face.

One day del Toro… patience… it’s the key to hitting that goal!

Hell Boy 3

It’s not looking too good for a third installment of Big Red gang. He was recently asked about this premise and he said he had a meeting with a studio, but there isn’t a ton of interest in the Hell Boy franchise right now. Well hell! Ron Perlman is on-board with the idea, but studio funding is the breaking point for whether or not we’ll see this trilogy completed or not.

Other Movie Projects

IMDb is full of movies that are in various development stages for del Toro, but as it is with many info sources that are open-source, everything is subject to change!

But with that disclaimer out of the way, check out the list of 15 titles under his belt that ranges from optioned properties to scripts:

  • Alma – Executive Producer;
  • Trollhunters – Producer, Writer;
  • Pinocchio – Executive Producer, Producer, Writer (story);
  • Saturn and the End of Days – Producer, Writer (screenplay), Director;
  • The Witches – Writer (screenplay), Director;
  • Beauty and the Beast – Producer;
  • Champions – Producer, Writer (screenplay);
  • Death: The High Cost of Living – Executive Producer;
  • The Orphanage – Producer, Writer (screenplay);
  • Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde – Director;
  • Drood – Producer;
  • Frankenstein – Writer (screenplay), Director;
  • Midnight Delivery – Producer;
  • The Haunted Mansion – Executive Producer, Producer, Writer, Director;
  • The Ring 3D – Executive Producer;

And don’t forget, the Director’s Cut Blu-ray of Mimic came out last month on Amazon.

That’s what I have for ya for now… I am patiently waiting for any and all news regarding Guillermo del Toro or Pacific Rim. So when I see it… I’ll crank it out here, at Cinema Static on Brusimm.

Fatollah, you shouldn’t leave your email in comments text sections. If you want to pitch something to any movie maker, you should try to locate that person’s agent and contact those folks. -Bruce
