Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’ Movie

Guillermo del Toro is truly starting to become my go-to man for entertainment.  The man behind Cronos (w), Mimic (w)(One of my all-time fun-fave movies), Blade II (d), Pan’s Labyrinth (w,d), Splice (exec prod), & Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (w), I’m starting to realize that I’ve liked his work before becoming aware it was his work.  [w: writer, d:director]

Guillermo del Toro has three projects in the pipe as the writer or director right now.  He’s the pen behind the scripts for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey & The Hobbit: There and Back Again, which are both being filmed right now.  But he’s also the director for the movie Pacific Rim, which is in pre-production stages right now.

PACIFIC RIM - The Movie Teaser Poster

Pacific Rim, from Warner Bros Pictures, is an interesting title that belies what I suspect will be the approach to this movie.  The movie goer is distracted by one thing interesting while the real action sneaks up on you.  I say that because the title does not hint at aliens attacking Earth, and yet, that’s how the summary goes.

When an alien attack threatens the Earth’s existence, giant robots piloted by humans are deployed to fight off the menace.”

It’s also been called a monster movie.  So we have monsters and aliens.  And here I thought the title referred to the ring around the ocean where earthquakes emanate from!  That’s what I mean by distracting!

Right now the movie has Charlie Day (a scientist), Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi attached, while the screenplay is written by Travis Beacham.  Beacham’s past writing credentials include Dog Days of Summer and Clash of the Titans.  On his future slate, he has The Black Hole and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.  (Yea, I know, more remakes.)

Comic Con attendees will also be getting some insight about Pacific Rim because the production company, Legendary Pictures, will be having a preproduction preview from cast members and such in a panel on Friday, at 12:45pm, in room 6BCF.

Filming for Pacific Rim starts in November 2011 and in interviews, has called the project a “Dream come true.” for himself, as it will be involving giant monsters.

And according to the great website, AICN, this is not a or the upcoming Godzilla movie.  We’re still languishing around waiting for news on anything about the Legendary Pictures swing at the mythical giant lizard, but the Godzilla news front has been pretty quiet.  Too quiet.

If you’ve been watching the entity known as the omniscient internet, you know there’s been some contention with this and At the Mountains of Madness because Legendary Pictures wanted this PG-13 monster movie to come out first.

Of course, despite that sounding silly, this production company might be developing a pretty good sense for what and when things will work, considering they’re behind movies such as The Hangover, Inception,  Nolan’s Batman movies and such.  Right now they have Clash of the Titans 2 (filming), The Dark Knight Rises (filming), Man of Steel (pre-production) on their active slate amongst other things.  Movies they have in the development phase include Hot Wheels, Godzilla, Warcraft, Mass Effect amongst a few others.

For now, Pacific Rim is slated for a July 2013 release date to movie theaters and it’s being distributed by Warner Bros Pictures.  After reading Guillermo del Toro‘s incredibly fresh take on vampires in his book series, “The Strain,” I look forward to what he can do with monsters, giant robots and aliens in Pacific Rim.
