AMC has taken the western drama called Hell on Wheels and ordered a second season of this wonderful, gritty western.
And that’s wonderful news for fans of the series.
Hell on Wheels stars Anson Mount (Straw Dogs; Last Night), Common (Terminator Salvation), Colm Meaney (The Conspirator; ST:TNG) and Christopher Heyerdahl (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn; New Moon; Sanctuary, Caprica, Stargate Altantis).
The show is about a Cullen Bohannan (Mount) who is trying to track down the murderers of his wife and child. This quest leads him to the site of the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad’s tracks that are heading out west. The series takes place in the 1860′s.
While at this camp, he encounters several folks who make his time in the camp rather interesting.
The characters are a fascinating representation of an inspirational and ugly era of our history. One the one hand, we were crawling out of the dirt and pursuing the technological advancements we were capable of in that era.
On the other hand, though this series takes place in the post-slave era, it shows the unenlightened piece of humanity and how people treated people of a different color, or how the Indians were treated as man moved West. It’s embarrassing.
The premiere episode started off a bit slow to the feel, but once everyone was introduced, the story was a compelling piece of telling in subsequent episodes.
Hell on Wheels trails only The Walking Dead as far as premiere ratings go and is a kick-ass series to watch on AMC. (Yep, that’s my subtle form of recomendation)
Hell on Wheels airs on Sundays and the 1st season finale is due for January 15th, 2012.
