The Internet

Mashable tossed out some interesting stats the other day regarding the internet, the consumer and social networks.

  • 75% of the world Internet users visit social networks.
  • The average user spent 6 hours on social sites in April of 2010

I think they’re interesting numbers. I used to enjoy Facebook because I could hook up with family. Others I know use Facebook, Twitter and other micro-blog services to pitch their wares. There are various other business structures that help propagate these networks and it is much like a food cycle.

Food cycle? Yep.

  • Twitter needs users to make it profitable.
  • Online businesses use twitter to generate visitors from Twitter users.
  • Twitter users come back to Twitter to keep up with the latest news

-

  • Twitter needs those users to succeed.
  • Businesses need Twitter to succeed.
  • Users need Twitter to succeed.

(Or, until the next, newest shiny thing comes along, because we’re a fickle bunch, humans are.)

It’s a fascinating business model that the Internet is starting to generate. It’s changed TV viewing. It’s changed media information delivery. It’s changed everything as the world becomes more Internet-centric. We’re dependent on it. It and our cell phones.

The Internet also changes people. I’ve seen how the anonymity of the Internet can make people more daring or crappy.  It’s easy for people to be ass-hats but the Internet can be a place to prosper and deliver healthy messages and build businesses with.  It depends on the person.

Yes, computers have changed our lives and the destiny of humanity.

Those are pretty interesting stats up at the top!  That’s for sure.
