In an interview on Comic Book Movie with Bob Layton, (Creator of War Machine character) Layton put it out there that the ending of Iron Man 2 is the perfect seque for the “Demon in a Bottle” part of Iron Man’s history.
Tony Stark fought a serious fight with alcoholism that stuck with me as a poignant memory of the comic book series since I read it, back in 1979.
It was an ugly part of Stark’s life and I couldn’t wait for him to get through it.
Layton said the way IM2 ends could lead into that, if they wanted to.
And with War Machine being introduced in this upcoming movie, Iron Man 2, WM was an important player in the Demon in the Bottle series.
Not to mention this story direction would play right into Robert Downey Jr.’s past experiences.
In closing, Layton said we’re going to be blown away by what we see in this movie, Iron Man 2. I wonder if he means something like this”
