5-16-12 Update: We are all wondering what’s up with James Pickens Jr… again.  See my latest, on why, after the 2013 season finale, why I don’t think James is leaving the show.

A lot happened on this week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy, titled “I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked.”

Webber’s drinking problem has caught up to him.

[Update 9-25-11:  Last year folks were wondering if James Pickens Jr. is leaving the show.  Obviously, he didn’t do it in 2010.  But now, fans are asking once again in season 8 of 2011, if James Pickens Jr. leaving Grey’s Anatomy?  << — follow that link for the latest on this one.  End update]

Grey's Anatomy... Ellen Pompeo, James Pickins Jr. and Patrick Dempsey

Though Derek “tested” him, Webber failed his test. And maybe I missed it, but did Derek (Patrick Dempsey) give the Chief, Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) any real chance like sitting down and telling him to “straighten out or I’m going to the board.”?

It seemed harsh. By the end of the episode, the “board” was outside his office.

What does this mean? Webber could lose his license.  This prompts the question, “Is James Pickens Jr. leaving Grey’s Anatomy?”

Sources at TV Guide say no, James Pickens Jr. is not leaving Grey’s Anatomy. (See my further investigation at the bottom on this matter.)

That means we have a recovery story for Webber and a career hurdle challenge for Shepherd.

And through it all, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) lost two-fold. She called “postit” with Derek to keep him from going to the board, but then gave in to his double-back blackmail by telling her he was going to hire Izzie when he took over the Chief’s job.

But Izzie (Katherine Heigl) is moving on because her and Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) look done. Which is a shame since I feel that of the two, Alex had the tougher, longer road to get where he got, and to have it thrown in his face with Izzie taking off during her cancer scare.  (I’m not taking away from Izzie’s journey, but I’ve been more sympathetic with Chambers’ character)

And what is up between Lexi (little) Grey and Mark Sloan (Eric Dane)? Sloan cheats on Lexi and I guess it’s O.K. by him, but when Lexi counter-fesses that she slept with Alex, he’s all miffed. Dude, it looks all even-Stephen! Oh well.

James Pickens Jr.

I dug around on IMDB for any additional info on James Pickens Jr..

The only additional work he’s done outside of Seattle Grace is a project slated for release in 2010 called Just Wright, where he plays the father of Queen Latifah (Leslie).

It’s categorized as a Comedy / Romance and it’s about “A physical therapist falls for the basketball player she is helping recover from a career-threatening injury.” and is noted as being in production.

Amongst many numerous roles, here are the more notable projects from Pickens Jr.’s past:

  • 1998-2002 on the X-Files, as FBI Deputy Director Alvin Kersh? (19 episodes)
  • 2000, he played Detective Mike McKrew in The Practice. (15 episodes)
  • In 1996, he was in 19 episodes of Roseanne as Chuck Mitchell.
  • In 1992 he played Henry Thomas for 10 episodes on Beverly Hills 90210.

But nothing new on Pickens Jr., so I think the news is correct that he’s not going anywhere!

Derek and Meredith are so sickening. I would stop watching if not for the other characters in the show. Derek has wanted the chief’s job from the very beginning. He pretended to be concerned about the chief, but all the while he was just lurking, waiting for a chance to pounce .

I think the point is that Derek never sat down and directly said something like, “You’re an alcoholic! I know it, and I’m going to the board!”

It can be said that he gave the chief a chance to fess up and take accountability, but most alcoholics are in denial. Not to mention I do not feel that Derek really wanted the chief to have a “come to jesus” moment, because ultimately Derek wants to be the new chief of surgery.

Now what would be an amazing twist is if Derek is only the acting chief till the board finds a more permanent replacement.

LOL… LT: Like I said,

“(I’m not taking away from Izzie’s journey, but I’ve been more sympathetic with Chambers’ character)”

I hear ya, but I’m not a Heigl fan and sort of ignore her. I know it’s bad, but I can’t help myself when it comes to her.

Oh please…noone had it tougher than Izzie. Trailer park upbringing, had to give up her child, fiancee died in her arms virtually, her best friend died, she almost died from cancer, she lost her job…to name but a few. How does Alex’s journey even compare to that. Also Izzie will be back in a few episodes..Heigl is on maternity leave.
