INCEPTION L-R Leonardo DiCaprio and Christopher Nolan

Leonardo DiCaprio is making a huge name for himself in the entertainment industry and I’ll explain why I’ve said this, in this quick Personality Focus!

The first time I took notice of Leonardo DiCaprio, was in James Cameron‘s 1997 movie, “Titanic.”  Whether that was THE launch project that put him in the limelight or any of the 11 previous hit movies he was in that helped launch him there, I’d say it was the cumulative effort on his part.  But if there’s one thing for me, he’s cemented his iconic status in Hollywood with Christopher Nolan‘s Inception!  Regardless it’s curious to see that he’s had a true Hollywood beginning, as Leonardo DiCaprio was born November 11th, 1974 in Hollywood, CA.

You might remember him from the 1990 TV series “Santa Barbara” in the 5 episodes as the Young Mason Capwell, or as Luke Brower in the 1991 TV series “Growing Pains.”  But from TV, he seemed to focus purely on movies.  His first credited movie is “Critters 3,” landed his “Growing Pains” role just after that and since then, he’s been seen in 20+ movies.

Do you remember him in

  • What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)
  • The Basketball Diaries (1995)
  • The Beach (2000)
  • Catch Me If You Can (2002)
  • The Departed (2006)
  • Body of Lies (2008)

Of course he’s had two recent hit movies in 2010 with “Shutter Island” and “Inception” and he’s playing J.Edgar Hoover in the upcoming 2012, Clint Eastwood directed, Ron Howard produced movie “Hoover.”  (This will sure to be a powerful movie.  The film synopsis for “Hoover” is: “Biopic on FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, focusing on his scandalous career and controversial private life as a homosexual and rumored cross dresser.”)  This is not the first time he’s played a controversial character!

But when I was looking to see what upcoming movies Leonardo DiCaprio was going to be in, I was surprised to note how many movies are in the pipe with him being the producer!

As an actor, he’s tied into a few upcoming projects that aren’t in production yet… so I treat them as rumors for the moment and I’d like you to think of them the same way until we actually hear otherwise:

  • Untitled Michael Mann Project – Actor
  • Untitled Gucci Biopic – Maurizio Gucci (rumored)
  • Untitled Brian Koppelman and David Levien Project – Actor (rumored), Producer
  • Farragut North – Actor, Producer
  • Cache  – Actor
  • Brave New World – Actor (rumored), Producer
  • Prisoners – Actor
  • Beat the Reaper – Actor (rumored), Producer

(It’s good to be your own producer!)

Appian Way

Appian Way production company is owned by Leonardo DiCaprio.  Appian Way’s first solo production was 2004’s “The Aviator” starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett,  Kate Beckinsale, Jude Law & others.  It’s also produced (in association with) the Johnny Depp starrer, “Public Enemies” and DiCaprio’s own “Shutter Island.”

What was stunning to me was that Appian Way has 25 titles in the pipe, ranging from optioned properties, projects in the script stage & unknown, ie: rumored?

As it stands, they are filming the Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight, Thirteen) directed, Dave Johnson written (Orphan) movie “Red Riding Hood” that stars Gary Oldman, Amanda Seyfried, Lukas Haas and “Stargate’s” own Michael Shanks!  “Red Riding Hood” is due out in March of 2011 and the film synopsis goes as follows:

“Set in a medieval village that is haunted by a werewolf, a young girl falls for an orphaned woodcutter, much to her family’s displeasure.”

Sure, it’s a genre film, but considering the cast & crew, I think this one will have legs!

Leonardo DiCaprio’s Future Vision

From what I can tell, DiCaprio had a goal from day one and has been moving in that direction ever since his first role.  Judging from the relatively small amount of time spent in TV roles, he’s been focused on movie production.

When he worked with the likes of

  • Martin Scorsese (Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island),
  • Steven Spielberg (Catch Me If You Can),
  • Edward Zwick (Blood Diamond),
  • Kevin Connolly (Gardener of Eden),
  • Ridley Scott (Body of Lies) &
  • Christopher Nolan (Inception),

I just know that he not only took direction from these wonderfully insightful directors, but DiCaprio was also taking notes.  Leonardo Dicaprio is a visionary who knows where he’s headed and is crafting his life and Hollywood, around his own sense of dreams.

If you think about it, his production company name of Appian Way, may have been aptly named.

The Appian Way (Latin and Italian: Via Appia) was one of the earliest and strategically most important Roman roads of the ancient republic. It connected Rome to Brindisi, Apulia, in southeast Italy.”

Happenstance or intentional?  I’m starting to think intentional.  To me, Leonardo DiCaprio is quite the inspiration. And at a going rate of $20M a film, he can be just that, inspired!  I think I’m going to have to start creating a new collection of films… those of Mr. DiCaprio’s!  (Just what I need, another collection!)

The Travis McGee project is still in what is called the script stage. That could be any number of things from still writing it to reviews to now working on a new draft.

I checked around with my contacts and at the moment, there’s no new news since Oliver Stone signed on to direct back in April.

I’ll keep my feelers out and let ya’all know if anything else changes!

Thanks for coming by Ron!

What has happened to the Travis McGee project with 20th Century Fox. Leo DiCaprio has signed to play the part of Travis McGee and is also producing. Is the project dead or still in the works? Thanks.
