Director / writer M. Night Shyamalan tackles his love of superheroes and super powers outside the realm of normal everyday settings in The Last Airbender. M. tackles a fictional world where we follow the adventures of Aang, a young successor to a long line of Avatars, who must put his childhood ways aside and stop the Fire Nation from enslaving the Water, Earth and Air nations.
It looks visually stunning and it appears to be taking a swing at an epic story line within the world of fantasy. Many of the movie trailers have looked pretty cool.
Amongst the cast of The Last Airbender are Jackson Rathbone, Nicola Peltz, Dev Patel, Noah Ringer (Aang), Cliff Curtis, Seychelle Gabriel, Jessica Andres and Shaun Toub.
Shyamalan first found serious recognition after bringing us the movie, The Sixth Sense. He then had hits and misses with other projects, though I’ve enjoyed Unbreakable & Signs. The Village was a fascinating premise underneath it all and I have not caught The Happening yet. I have not heard anyone really gushing about it, so I haven’t gone out of my way to catch it yet. I’ll probably catch it on FX or some other network where I can get deafened by network TV ads!
Shyamalan’s next upcoming project is titled The Night Chronicles: Devil. It’s about a group of folks getting stuck in an elevator and they soon realize that one of them in the confined space is the devil himself. It looks to be due out in February 2011.
