MGM Selling Joss Whedon’s ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ Rights

For some reason, it seems that MGM has put the rights to The Cabin in the Woods up for sale.  This would seem to contradict the positive sound bytes some actors have distributed saying they expect the movie to hit theaters before the end of the year.   Or were they aware of what was going to take place, and realize that someone will snatch up those rights.  That is, if MGM isn’t asking too much.

Release 'The Cabin in the Woods'

On the bright side, there is a support group page on Facebook that just recently produced the above cool looking pseudo poster for The Cabin in the Woods and they’re probably feeling pretty excited right now.  Or at least is thinking there may very well be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Joss Whedon himself says that he’s aware of some studios that have shown interest and that’s a great thing also.

This would be a great move… for a distributor to pick up The Cabin in the Woods, wait until after The Avengers has released, then piggy back off that notoriety to help pump up the project!

To quote the man:

“I know that MGM is talking to people about it. Because MGM is, Everything must go – they’ve lost their lease. And I believe that there is some interest from other companies in acquiring it and distributing it. More than that, I cannot say, but I have hope that “Avengers” may not be the only thing I get to put out next year.”
