Optimus Prime from 'Transformers 3'

Recently Michael Bay had a little press snippet with some folks and also Paramount Pictures released a new promo image of Optimus Prime, looking ready for battle in Transformers: Dark of the Moon (AKA Transformers 3).

The scene described is that Shia LeBeouf is on the top floor of a building that’s getting squeezed into an hour-glass shape by a huge burrowing Decepticon.

That short description that I just wrote already sets the idea of a tone from the new Transformers 3 film, Transformers: Dark of the Moon. This kind of destruction is what we’ve come to love from these awesome popcorn movies.  But this time, is the term “popcorn movie” undercutting director Michael Bay‘s vision for this third chapter of Bay’s trilogy?

In his press junket Bay tells the attending press that this story is a more mature approach to the franchise, that it is a darker story and he anticipates that there will be a more emotional feel to the ending of this movie.

I can’t help but wonder that it’s how emotional it is to Michael Bay, if this is truly his last of the three movies that he’s finished out the franchise with?

Select press saw twenty minutes of footage and they called it “crazy,” “huge” and “merciless.”

But his approach to this third chapter of his vision of the Transformers franchise involves the premise of dropping some of the goofball humor we saw in T2 (Transformers 2, Revenge of the Fallen) and try to orchestrate more coherent battles in the movie.

Again, he reminds us that T2 was put out while under the umbrella of the affects of the writers strike.

But I think we need to keep in mind that despite how he felt and how the high-brow reviews raked the movie over the coals, it does have its own charm in its own way. Yes, charm.

Some of the changes we have coming at us are things like John Malkovich being a psychotic boss over LaBeouf. There are two small ‘bots that are aimed at entertaining smaller kids who might be in the audience. And in case there have been some conflicting reports throughout the last few months, it looks like he clarifies that the robot twins, in his words,

They’re not even in it. Not. Even. In. It.

Bay refuses to call the movie bigger, but rather, that there’s a more intimate approach to the story. It’s focused on a small group of souls fighting the fight and there’s no Calvary coming this time around.

Michael Bay said that he’s worked hard on this movie, working every single day for the last two years to bring you, the fans, this new movie. He’s working hard to make the fans understand that T2 was a mistake but that he’d rather he put out what he did than give the boot to so many people looking for paychecks when a small group of people go on strike.

He wants us to understand he’s tried his best to bring us, the fans, a better movie.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon opens in theaters July 1st, 2011.
