Mortal Kombat: Legacy Web Series

I’ve been seeing the headlines about the online series, Mortal Kombat: Legacy, but I didn’t pursue it. I presumed a few different things that didn’t promote my following up on the news. Today I was pulled in and checked out the first 7 episodes of this online series.

At first, without reading into it, I presumed this was an iTunes thing because, well, iTunes has many cool things. But instead, I found it on YouTube. (This makes it a Cinema Static YouTube pick!)

I ‘tuned’ into the first episode of Mortal Kombat: Legacy, titled “Ep. 1 – Jax, Sonya and Kano (Part 1).”

My second surprise was the cast that I was presented with. I was expecting this to be an indie kind of project with friends of the creators, AKA, potential non-name cast. Something that we usually see in these kinds of things. (That’s not a bad thing… it’s just what it is.)

Again, WRONG! First minute or two I was presented with actor faces that I knew from television, and subsequent episodes also had familiar faces. Familiar faces from past genre projects!

The cast for the first two episodes included, as they appeared, Darren Shahlavi (Red Riding Hood, Watchmen); Jerri Ryan (Star Trek: Voyager, Shark, Body of Proof); Tahmoh Penikett (Battlestar Galactica, Dollhouse) & the consummate tough dude, Michael Jai White (The Dark Knight, Spawn).

The cinematography did not disappoint, being done by C. Kim Miles. His resume is filled with known films like Hunt to Kill (Emilie Ullerup fans will recognize that title.) & The Break-Up Artist. Everyone is directed by Kevin Tancharoen (Fame, upcoming: Glee Live! 3D!). Contradiction Films produces and Warner Premiere is distributing.

What it looks like is that this series is looking to create an origins of the franchise characters of Mortal Kombat that is rooted in a more realistic-like setting. More or less. In the premiere episodes Jerri Ryan plays Sonya Blade, White plays Briggs, Shahlavi – Kano and Penikett plays Stryker.

To be honest, I think this looks to be a great online series that is attempting to create a rich tapestry of history of the PC game and movie franchise. It might just work! Considering the first episode has itself over 10 million views when I happened on it!

Each of the episodes are a beginnings, or origins-like episode of the characters in the title, that give you a feel for where they see the characters come from. We’re not seeing a huge bit of continuity of story in the episodes yet. These are all character introductions and so if you see them out of order, you won’t be traumatized by it. (Though I’d recommend seeing the 2-parters in their designed order.)

I’m finding some of the episodes rather interesting, that’s for sure. I’m glad I waited for most of them to be out
