Most Profitable Movies Ever? Think Indie Movie

When you think most profitable movies ever, I bet the first few films that come to mind might be James Cameron‘s works of Avatar and Titanic. But there are movies that spent a lot less to film and still cranked in the bucks. If you dwell on it, Cameron dropped big bucks to make his movies.

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King: 1008% return.
  • The Hangover (2009) Return on investment: 1297%
  • Jaws (1975) Return on investment: 1308%
  • Star Wars (1977) Return on investment: 1938%
  • Slumdog Millionaire (2008) Return on investment: 2520%
  • E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) Return on investment: 3172%

For the record, Titanic has a roughly 800% return and Avatar, over a 1000% return, so Cameron does bring in the returns. But to consider profitable, you have to think outside the known realm of movies and consider the indie movies that cost a fraction of what mainstream studios spend on their movies.

One such movie that is pretty recent and popular is Paranormal Activity, which netted a whopping 719,458% return on its investment! That may very well be the highest ranked return of any movie out there, but if you dwell on it, there are so many more indies coming to theaters as they get distribution deals via film festivals that there’s the chance that someone has or will break that number.

For those movie creators, it’s a great day to be a movie maker with inspiration!
