The other morning, someone called into the SIRIUS Satellite Radio program and made a fairly decent explanation as to why folks are sick of Jimmie Johnson winning all the time.
I don’t usually suscribe to this “hate” that folks have for winning drivers, but dang, after this listener tossed this idea out, a light went on in the old-noggin.
And I’m also going to guess that folks may not even realize this themselves. I understand being tired of the same guy beating my favorite driver angst. I really do. It can get old unless you strive to find something new or positive in the situation. That just ain’t easy, but on most days, it can be done!
But here’s the analogy: (after the break)
In football when you have a favorite team, each team plays a different single opponent each weekend. They actually have a chance to win a game and do well. This is a great justification for rooting for the team and it feels good at the end of the day when your favorite team can chalk up an X in the win column.
In NASCAR, the same (mostly) 43 drivers (Well, 35+ once you discount start and parks) are in the same race each weekend, and the same guy is trouncing your favorite driver (team) every weekend. This keeps your guy from doing any better than he usually does, and he rarely has a chance to shine on any weekend. You have to wait for “unforeseen” circumstances to happen to eliminate the top performer for your guy to have a chance.
I found this to be a fascinating analogy and thought I’d share it with you.
