David McCallum and Pauley Perrette in NCIS

Finally!  NCIS‘s medical master himself, Dr. Donald Mallard, or Ducky for short, played by David McCallum, is finally getting himself an origins episode!  It’s taken 8 seasons, but we’ll be getting ourselves some early Duck!

Along with the origins story, Catherine Dent (Shield) has been cast to show up in 2 episodes of NCIS as former Agent Whitney Sharp.  Sharp has a past with Dr. Mallard and is referred to as a bright and capable agent.

David McCallum’s Acting Past

For the man who plays Dr. Mallard, David McCallum, aside from his NCIS work, he’s also voiced some characters in animated projects during his NCIS tenure.  In 2009, he voiced Zeus in an animated Wonder Woman vid, in 2008 he voiced Alfred Pennyworth in Batman: Gotham Knight.  Also in 2009, he’s voiced Paradox in Ben 10: Alien Force & did other voice work in 2009’s The Replacements as C.A.R..

It appears that McCallum is a hard working actor who doesn’t sit on his laurels just because he’s in one of the biggest ratings netting series on TV!

Prior to NCIS, McCallum’s most lengthy role was that of Illya Kuryakin in the 1967 series, The Man from U.N.C.L.E..  After that, he played John Grey in the 1991 series, Trainer.  After that, he did spots in Babylon 5, one episode in a 1997 episode of Law & Order, a 5 episode stint in 1998’s Team Knight Rider and a 9 episode stint of 2001’s The Education of Max Bickford.

The Origin of NCIS

The consummate NCIS fan may already know this, but McCallum played Dr. Donald Mallard in a TV series prior to NCIS, in JAG!  The consummate fan will also know why.

The concept for NCIS was shown in two episodes of the CBS series JAG (episodes 8.20 & 8.21).  It was these two episodes that introduced the characters for NCIS.  From there, a spin-off from JAG, NCIS, premiered on September 23, 2003 on CBS.
