Welcome to the New DVD & Blu-ray Release Report for May 18th, 2010, from Cinema Static.
As the world spins out of control, worry not because DVDs last forever! Welcome to this weeks DVD report. This week is chock full of cool releases. I can’t discuss them all so make sure your read the lists carefully. Lots of great stuff for everyone! You can thank me later for leaving out the latest Barney, Diet/Workout DVDs, and the endless Micheal Jackson tributes. You won’t find them covered here. I have to make room for films with substance like, “Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus” starring Lorenzo Lamas.
DVD MOVIE OF THE WEEK
This week’s so called popular releases are, “Extraordinary Measures”, “Invictus,” “The Spy Next Door” and “Valentines Day.”. Ah what garbage! My DVD pick of the week is the film/documentary, “When You’re Strange-A Film About The Doors.” Woody Harrelson’s “The Messenger” gets honorable mention.
DVD TV SERIES/DOCUMENTARY OF THE WEEK
Whenever “Whitest Kids U Know” releases a new season, that’s always going to be my pick of the week. It’s hilarious as usual. These kids are pretty good and I like their political point of view. Honorable mentions go out to “Area 51: The Alien Interview.” Anyone want to see a real alien on video here’s your chance. I actually screened this last week and it was very good and creepy as hell. Also the “60 Minutes” interview with Conan O’Brien has been fast tracked to DVD. Very cool I’m going to be looking for this one.
BLU-RAY PICK OF THE WEEK
“Carlito’s Way” is my Blu-ray pick of the week! Honorable mention goes to out to the first double pack I’ve put on the list, “Black Sheep And Tommy Boy!” Ah great comedies that don’t even need a Blu-ray release but whatever. Here’s this weeks list.

RENTAL / USED DVD OF THE WEEK
My Rental / Used DVD of the week is, “Gran Torino” starring Clint Eastwood. I actually own this one and the other night decided to watch it again. Released in 2008 and probably Clint’s final performance the story is a perfect finale to finish what can only be described as a one of a kind career in film.
Walt Kowalski, has just lost his wife, he’s ashamed of his sons, his house is empty and the neighborhood has turned into an Asian conclave. Things get even worse when the local Asian gang recruit his neighbors son to steal Walt’s, classic Gran Torino.
Big surprise, Clint Eastwood nails this role perfectly in every way. The film never drags, the story is great, perfect ending! The supporting cast all rise with Eastwood making this one of his best films. I think my favorite Eastwood performance since, “Unforgiven.” “Gran Torino” is rated R for some violence and language. A perfect film for a Sunday afternoon.
