Welcome to the New DVD Release report from Cinema Static for the first week of May, and its pretty much meh unless your a Doctor Zhivago fan. There’s a ton of nature related Blu-ray releases if you want to stay inside and view Earth in glorious high definition. Hey you didn’t spend $3000 on a plasma high def home system for nothing? Besides who wants to fly to Poland with all that crazy fog going around?

My DVD pick of the week is, “Dirty Dancing Limited Keepsake Edition.” LOL just messing with ya. There really isn’t anything that stands out for me this week. Bobby Dogs, Leap Year, Tooth Fairy, I mean come on!

DVD TV SERIES/DOCUMENTARY OF THE WEEK

My choice for TV Series/Documentary of the week is “Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy.” This in depth documentary covers the entire horror franchise as well as interviews on the new film. Runner up this week is the Ronald D. Moore science fiction TV movie, “Virtuality.”
(Editor’s Note: Psst: There’s a bunch of Doctor Who in the TV section this week!)
-
“Saving Private Ryan,” is my Blu-ray pick of the week. Runner up is, “Escape From La” and I’m not kidding, call me Snake! Try to avoid “The Tooth Fairy”, another “solid” career choice for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Like watching it on Blu-ray is going to ease the suffering, yeah sure! Enough about my personal issues, here’s the checklist for the week.

The 2009, R rated drama/comedy “Shrink” starring Kevin Spacey is my Rental/Used DVD of the week.
Henry Carter (Spacey) is L.A.’s top celebrity psychiatrist. Problem is he’s self medicating with pot, while struggling with his own mid-life career crisis. Everything changes one day when a pro bono case turns into a unexpected life changing event.
This is one of those quirky “Hollywood life” films that delivers a interesting story with some often deep and hilarious characters. Great performances by Spacey of course, as well as Keke Palmer and Dallas Roberts. There’s also an unexpected un credited performance by Robin Williams that added a sense of wtf surealness to the film.
Spacey fans will want to purchase this one, everyone else I recommend “Shrink” as a solid rental. Rated R, mainly for drug use and explicit language. DVD includes, Director (Jonas Pate) audio commentary as well as several interviews and a Jackson Browne music video. I picked it up at (FreakBeat Records) in the Valley for $5 bucks used.

NEXT WEEK IN DVD/BLU-RAY
Next week, the cinematic red tide of, “Legion” and “Daybreakers” are set to roll onto the shores of home video hell. There’s a new Beatles documentary called, “Behind The Curtain” that looks interesting. And “The Karate Kid 1 & 2″ finally arrives on glorious Blu-ray. If that’s not a good reason to purchase a new plasma TV, Blu-ray player home system combo, I don’t know what is.
Until then see you at the DVD store! I’ll be in the TV section this week.
