New DVD and Blu-ray releases this week

This week we have a few great movies and shows coming out making it hard to pick if you’re on a budget.

Captain America 2 is coming out, and it’s a much improved, modern day setting for the war hero.  Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD is out, along with Supernatural, Homeland, Vampire Dairies, and Blue Bloods.  We also have a classic Jack Lemmon/Tony Curtis comedy movie, a few Toho (Godzilla, Mothra, etc) re-releases, Doctor Who, My Little Pony, and a season of an animated Batman series.

Before we hit that list up, here’s what’s coming out

In Movie Theaters on Friday, September 12

No Good Deed

Rated PG-13 84 min

Terri is a devoted wife and mother of two, living an ideal suburban life in Atlanta when Colin, a charming but dangerous escaped convict, shows up at her door claiming car trouble. Terri offers her phone to help him but soon learns that no good deed goes unpunished as she finds herself fighting for survival when he invades her home and terrorizes her family.

Stars: Taraji P. Henson, Idris Elba, Leslie Bibb, Kate del Castillo

I don’t get why Idris Elba is doing a stabber thriller, but so be it.

Dolphin Tale 2

Rated PG 107 min

The team of people who saved Winter’s life reassemble in the wake of her surrogate mother’s passing in order to find her a companion so she can remain at the Clearwater Marine Hospital.

Stars: Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Nathan Gamble, Cozi Zuehlsdorff

Even by adding real-life Soul Surfer Bethany Hamilton to the cast, I can’t get Blackfish out of my mind.  Not from the aspect of the story, but the aspect of what animals were used for the film.

Coming Out on DVD/Blu-ray Tuesday, September 9th, 2014:

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (1-Disc Blu-ray)
Starring:     Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson
[IMDb user score of 7.9/10]

Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Season 1 [Blu-ray]
Starring:     Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Brett Dalton
[IMDb user score 7.4]
(The show started slow and almost shot itself in the foot trying to pace itself to stay in tune with some Marvel Cinematic Universe releases, but then the story picked up and things became so much better.  For those who stuck it out through the thick and thin, it was a great reward to see it develop into something we were all hoping for. For those who bailed on the show, I get it. But maybe you want to check out the last third of that ill-fated first season and see what you think now.

If you don’t believe me, maybe the IMDb score will help convince you to reconsider.)

Supernatural: Season 9
Starring:     Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles
[IMDb: 8.7]
(Despite going on for nine seasons, they keep cranking out good stories. Sure, they’re working it over a bit to keep it fresh, pulling in the regular cast that fans love like xx and xx, but sooner or later, there’s only so many demons and devils you can pull out of the closet to create good stories.  But consider this…  an IMDb score of 8.7 is a pretty impressive score.)

Homeland: Season 3
Starring:     Damian Lewis, David Harewood
[IMDb: 8.5]
(The IMDb score says it all. I’ve never seen it but friends keep telling me it is a worthy series.)

Fed Up
With Katie Couric
[IMDb 7.4]

Vampire Diaries: Season 5
Starring:     Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley
[IMDb 8.1]

Starring:     Len Cariou, Donnie Wahlberg
