For the 2nd time in The Chase, an accident took place on the last lap involving John Andretti, and rather than throw the caution flag, NASCAR kept the race going, trying to make it a popular finish where the finishing order is determined by the racing and not the caution.
John Andretti, Jimmie Johnson and Denny Hamlin seem to not be totally against the scenario that evolved either. But Denny wasn’t running side-by-side with anyone, Jimmie did say it would be safer to use the yellow though. Not sure how John came to being not against it since he was the sitting duck out there!
I can’t tell you how many times we’ve been told that if a yellow comes out, that’s when the race ends. Especially in a Green-White-Checkered situation.
It’s true that a race-ending caution is not a popular way to end a race, but NASCAR is taking a daring stance, going against their own rules to make this happen.
They’re pretty much letting it be like the old days of “racing to the yellow.”
I know that’s not the actual case, but I think there needs to some standards set if they’re going to keep trying this new approach.
- A wrecked car MUST stay in place up against whatever wall it has parked against… the racing field does not need a moving target in their way.
- If a wrecked car is in the middle of the track, the yellow has to be called. Period.
NASCAR is taking a daring approach, but at least they’re trying to keep the excitement in it.
Now, we here at NBaP just hopes nothing bad happens from this new stance.
