The upcoming set of opening movies for Friday, August 27th sees a few movies coming at us… one with a limited re-opening. The opening movies include a limited opening for Centurion, a limited re-release of a special edition of Avatar, and then Takers, Flipped and Eli Roth’s produced horror flicked, The Last Exorcism.
Box Office Numbers
The people have spoken and done so loudly. The Expendables hung on to the top spot this last weekend at the Box Office and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is slipping into obscurity, bringing in only $5M. The parody, Vampires Suck took 2nd at the box office. Piranha 3D stuck it in at 6th for it’s gory, 3D, boob filled opening weekend at $10M!

Opening Movies
Avatar, which has already grossed $2.7 billion Worldwide, is going to make just an itty bitty bit more with a limited re-release with 8 extra minutes of footage.
It stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver and others.

The Last Exorcism stars Patrick Fabian, Ashley Bell, Iris Bahr, Caleb Landry Jones and more in a movie about a troubled evangelical minister who agrees to let his last exorcism be filmed by a documentary crew.

Flipped, stars Madeline Carroll, Callan McAuliffe, Rebecca De Mornay, Anthony Edwards (ER) & John Mahoney in a story about two eighth graders start to have feelings for each other despite being total opposites. The movie is based on the novel “Flipped” by Wendelin Van Draanen.
The screenplay is written by, and directed by Rob Reiner (The Bucket List).

Centurion, starring Michael Fassbender, Dominic West, Olga Kurylenko, Imogen Poots is about a splinter group of Roman soldiers fight for their lives behind enemy lines after their legion is decimated in a devastating guerrilla attack.
It is written and directed by Neil Marshall (The Descent, Doomsday and my hands-down favorite werewolf movie: Dog Soldiers!).

Takers stars Zoe Saldana, Hayden Christensen, Paul Walker, Chris Brown, Idris Elba & Matt Dillon and is about a group of bank robbers find their $20 million plan interrupted by a hard-boiled detective.
It’s written and directed by John Luessenhop (Lockdown).

If I had to pick one from the above picks, I think I’d go with Centurion, just because it’s from the guy that brought us The Descent and Dog Soldiers. I might, just might consider hitting up the re-release of Avatar. I never caught it in the theaters and I might make it my first modern day 3D movie to see. (Yea, I’m being a hold-out.)
