Opening Movies from Cinema Static Logo

This week is a quiet week indeed.  The only opening movies this week are Resident Evil: Afterlife & The Romantics.

Unless of course, you live in Chicago where they’re having the Chicago Flashback Weekend Horror Convention! If you’re one of the lucky ones then you’ll be getting the chance to see some fun Bruce Campbell movies on Saturday: The Evil Dead, Army of Darkness, Evil Dead 2 & My Name is Bruce!  Have fun gang!

Weekend Box Office

Box Office Numbers from Cinema StaticDespite reviews declaring The American a slow build of a film, George Clooney pulled in the viewers with a $13M weekend.  Machete with Danny Trejo brought in $11.3M and Going the Distance nabbed itself $6.9M.

Takers, starring Hayden Christensen, Matt Dillon, Chris Brown, Zoe Saldana & Idris Elba showed some staying power with the public and squeaked into the weekend’s 2nd spot with an $11.4M weekend.

If you do the math of how many theaters each movie was in, Takers averaged just under $5200 per theater & The American just under $4600 per theater.

Title Weekend Gross
The American $13M $16.1M
Takers $11.4M $37.9M

Resident Evil: Afterlife

Resident Evil 4 Promo Poster

Written, directed & produced by Paul W.S. Anderson (Pandorum, Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil franchise movies), it stars Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, Kim Coates, Shawn Roberts & Wentworth Miller amongst the ensemble.

As the plot summary goes for the 4th installment of the Resident Evil franchise:

In a world ravaged by a virus infection, turning its victims into the Undead, Alice (Jovovich), continues on her journey to find survivors and lead them to safety. Her deadly battle with the Umbrella Corporation reaches new heights, but Alice gets some unexpected help from an old friend. A new lead that promises a safe haven from the Undead takes them to Los Angeles, but when they arrive the city is overrun by thousands of Undead – and Alice and her comrades are about to step into a deadly trap.

It’s coming out in 3D and despite the gimmicky look to the preview trailers, at least Anderson went the extra step and actually filmed it in 3D with the same equipment that James Cameron came up with to film Avatar.

The Romantics

THE ROMANTICS 2010 movie

Written and directed by Galt Niederhoffer, it has a surprising cast led by Katie Holmes, Anna Paquin, Josh Duhamel, Adam Brody & Elijah Wood. It comes out of the Sundance Film Festival and will be out for a limited release!

The Summary for The Romantics:

Seven close friends reunite for the wedding of two of their friends. Problems arise because the bride and the maid of honor have had a long rivalry over the groom.

Oh… did I mention this was a comedic romance & is rated PG-13? And not a single Transformer tried stomping on Josh Duhamel or vampire chase down Anna Paquin.  How weird!
