This week we have The American with George Clooney, opening on Wednesday, Sept 1st and then Robert Rodriguez’s Machete and Going the Distance will follow up, opening on Friday, Sept 3rd. But first, here’s a quick box office report from last weekend.
Last Weekend’s (8-27) Box Office Performers
Eli Roth’s The Last Exorcism took the top cash drawer for the weekend, pulling in $21M in over 2800 theaters.
Takers took the 2nd spot with a 2200 theater weekend, and The Expendables hung on to the 3rd spot, bringing in $9.5M in 3398 theaters.
Technically, though Takers was 2nd in totals, it averaged more per theater ($9519) than the other movies. In my book, that made it the better performer!
The re-release of Avatar netted it another $4M in their coffers, making that off of a 812 theater showing.
| Title | Weekend | Gross |
| The Last Exorcism | $21.3M | $21.3M |
| Takers | $21M | $21M |
| The Expendables | $9.5M | $82M |
| Eat Pray Love | $7M | $60.7M |
| The Other Guys | $6.6M | $99.3M |
| Vampires Suck | $5.3M | $27.9M |
| Inception | $5.11M | $271M |
| Nanny McPhee Returns | $4.74M | $17M |

Opening Movies for “Friday”
The American will be opening Wednesday, September 1st in theaters. It stars George Clooney & Irina Björklund. George plays an assassin who is hiding out in Italy for one last assignment.
It directed by Anton Corbin (Control) and the screenplay is written by Rowan Joffe (28 Weeks Later).
The director makes me nervous but Joffe has a nice movie under his belt. Add that to Clooney in the mix and this could be a good time at the theater.
