Today it was announced that Guillermo del Toro will be creating a new comic for the comic division of Legendary Entertainment.

This project is a Pacific Rim graphic novel from Guillermo del Toro. The graphic novel will be a prequel to the movie, giving readers critical details about the characters with info leading up to the first attack just before the movie.

“Each part tells a complete episode of that history, dipping selectively in and out of character back stories and sometimes focusing on new characters who aren’t necessarily in the movie. The idea is to expand the universe and explore how this war has affected not only our heroes, but the world beyond the film. That said, Stacker Pentecost’s (Idris Elba) origin will figure into all three parts, tracking his journey to high-ranking commander.”

To be honest, a while back I was given the opportunity to sample prequel graphic novels to the 2010 action spy movie, Red, with Bruce Willis. And to be honest, they were fun reads and they did, indeed, give the reader some great background info that made the movie a bit better. There were references in the movie that made perfect sense if you had read the novels.

So in a way, I might be looking forward to these prequel graphic novels.

And below, is a new viral movie poster for Pacific Rim that came out at New York Comic Con:
