[Quickie update dated 9/29: Here's the latest viral vids for Paranormal Acitivity 3!]
Paramount is seizing the moment and creating a sequel to the scary smash hit (no pun intended) Paranormal Activity. They’ve brought on Michael R. Perry (Law & Order: SVU) to write a script, and film editor Kevin Greutert (Saw) has been brought on-board to direct.
Any of us who have seen Paranormal Activity knows that it kicks butt, and as far as I’m concerned, desperately trying to create a sequel to take advantage of this superior nerve-wracking movie just seems to be standard remake / sequel mentality.
What’s going to be funny is to compare the sequel’s performance to that of it’s predecessor which took 7 days to film, only costing $15k. On the bright side, Oren Peli, the writer and director of Paranormal Activity, is serving as a producer for the sequel and says that these guys get it and we won’t be disappointed. (Of course, I’ve never heard anyone say ‘Hey, we’re struggling here and the movie is going to make you want to rip your eyes out, but come see it anyway. Free band-aids available at each screening!’)
I still smell something fishy there, but OK, if you say so Oren. But why wouldn’t you let the original genius pen and direct a 2nd installment? The PA sequel, Paranormal Acitivity 2, is due out on October 22nd, 2010. We’ll see how that goes.
BTW on Oren Peli:
Oren Peli is working on a new 7-day project… OK, I joke about the 7-day thing, but his new project is called Area 51 and we should be seeing that sometime this year too. (A group of teenager stumble upon the much fabled area.) He’s also producing an optioned horror flick titled Insidious. That’s due out in 2011. It’s being directed by James Wan (Saw II, III, IV, V, VI,VII, Death Sentence) Hmm.
Cinema Static is Worried
It sounds great that Oren Peli is on-board with a sequel and spitting out a new movie, but I’m worried that now that he’s becoming entrenched in the system, if he’ll stick to what worked for him in PA. It’s easy to be distracted from one’s own vision when they start to get clogged up in the cogs of any system. Then the system wants you to play on their playing field rather than the one that you’re comfortable in.
As I like to say, time will tell. Right?
