Pet Owners: A Thought About Your Dog And ID Chips

The other day I was watching the news and they had an article about pets that are becoming and have become victims of the economy.

The saddest part about the story was the part on the number of chipped animals that have to be put down these days.

Why?

It’s an awesome thing to put a ID microchip in your animal.  If they ever get lost and someone finds them, they can have the chip read at a Vet or Animal Shelter and discover who lives with this animal.  (Notice I don’t say “who owns the animal?”)

The problem arises with the pet’s roommates have moved, but they forget to update their information in whatever chip registry that they have registered with!

The moral to the story – when you change your place of residence, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, don’t forget to add Chip Information Update to your checklist of moving.  We change our address with many organizations.  Magazines, creditors, retirement pensions and who ever else.  Add Pet Chip Registry to that list!

Though you don’t believe it could happen to you, if your pet somehow gets out, gets scared and runs, that chip could make the difference between coming home or some other fate.

According to some, they say 90% of lost pets never return home.  Be one of those 10%, or better yet, raise that percentage if it ever happens to you.

I was thinking about resources, but what I’ll do is suggest the Google search term “pet microchip.”

There’s a pretty informative Wikipedia entry on the Microchip.
