Cinema Static on Brusimm logoEver wonder what stages some of your more anticipated movies are in? Me too. Like what’s up with The Expendables 2, or Ghostbusters 3 & The Wolverine. Has The Dark Knight Rises started filming yet, or what about Superman: Man of Steel?  And what’s up with that Alien prequel movie, Prometheus?  Plus, Cinema Static will touch on the movies that are close to finishing or are finished and looking at the homestretch prior to opening in the theaters!  And looking at the collection of cast, it definitely looks to be an exciting time for the Summer box office and movie-goers.

With that in mind, I thought I’d take a peek at what’s going on with different movies and their various states of being.

Movies in Development

Development is a tricky stage for a movie. That could be considered something that has a spec script but no one is biting or a project that actually has some legs under it. For instance, under the development list are such things as Warcraft, Super Troopers 2, World War Z (with J. Michael Straczynski noted as the writer), & Halo. It drives me crazy that Halo is kept alive in this list. Or that the ever-hopeful fan keeps updating a Thundercats movie entry. I think there’s a point in time you need to give it a rest. At the bottom of this article is the supposed test footage for a once hoped-for incarnation of a Thundercats movie, an animated version, from a few years back.  Or check out the preview of the upcoming ThunderCats animated series on Cartoon Network.

But here is the list of the more anticipated movies that are noted to be in development now:

  • The Expendables 2 (With all the old cast)
  • Ghostbusters 3 (Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis)
  • The Wolverine (with Hugh Jackman… but right now in limbo with no director)
  • Star Trek Sequel
  • Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall
  • Kill Bill Vol 3
  • Avatar 2

Movies in Pre-Production

  • Henry Cavill cast as SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEELThe Dark Knight Rises with Christian Bale, from Christopher Nolan. Filming to start in May.
  • Superman: Man of Steel with Henry Cavill, directed by Zack Snyder and filming set to begin in August.
  • The Hunger Games with Jennifer Lawrence and directed by Gary Ross, is set to start filming in May.
  • Dark Shadows with Johnny Depp, Chloe Moretz, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jackie Earle Haley and directed by the wonderfully twisted Tim Burton. Filming for this will be starting this month.
  • Bond 23 (Dudes, at this rate, we need to see Jason vs. Bond!)

Also in this list are Total Recall, Wanted 2, Die Hard 5, Paranormal Activity 3, Gambit, and other goodies.

Movies presently under the state of filming include

  • The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 (& 2) with the bland, blank stoic faced Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Dakota Fanning and the rest of the gang.
  • The Amazing Spider-Man with Emma Stone, Andrew Garfield, Rhys Ifans and more.
  • The Avengers, directed by everyone’s favorite… Joss Whedon, and starring everyone whose ever been in a Marvel Entertainment movie! Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg and more.
  • The Hobbit part 1 (& 2) with Saoirse Ronan, Orlando Bloom, Cate Blanchett, Elijah Wood and more. (Eh!? David Tennant & Leonard Nimoy are rumored to be in this project.)
  • Wrath of the Titans with Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes & Sam Worthington.
  • Men in Black 3, starring Will Smith, Alice Eve and Tommy Lee Jones & Josh Brolin.
  • Prometheus, the Aliens prequel that stars Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, the ever popular Noomi Rapace and more.

Movies in Post-Production

But ah, the most important of the lot of lists here are the movies in post-production. That means filming is done, some wrap-up filming and editing and such are now taking place as is the launch of the massive arms of the marketing machines taking wing and announcing their projects.

The release date is in parens.

  • The Hangover Part 2 (5/26), with Jamie Chung, Bradley Cooper, Liam Neeson and the other gang from the first movie.
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (7/15), starring Gary Oldman, Emma Watson, Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter and Daniel Radcliffe.
  • The Three Musketeers (10/14) from Paul W.S. Anderson of course, has Milla Jovovich in it but we’ll also be treated to Juno Temple, Logan Lerman, Ray Stevenson, Matthew, Luke Evans, Orlando Bloom and more. (Every generation needs their version of The Three Musketeers.)
  • Captain America: The First Avenger (7/22); now here’s one many in my circle are looking forward to. Starring Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Tommy Lee Jones and more in what many hope will finally be a good Cap movie.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (5/20) with Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush and the gang.
  • Transformers: Dark of the Moon (7/1), from Michael Bay, brings back Shia LeBeouf, Josh Duhamel, Hugo Weaving, and introduces a new love interest for Shia in Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, is the third chapter in Bay’s vision of the Transformers franchise. Oh, how can I not forget mentioning John Torturro as Simmons, or that Alan Tudyk will also be in it?
